San Diego Padres vs Colorado Rockies Analysis
The San Diego Padres host the Colorado Rockies in the fourth of a five-game series in Petco Park. The Friars swept both games yesterday 13-5 and 3-2.
Tonight right-hander Chad Kuhl is slated to go for the Rox, and the Padres will send hard-throwing southpaw Blake Snell to the bump. First pitch Wednesday night is scheduled for 9:40 EDT / 6:40 PDT. Tonight should be the Padres debut for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, and the books have priced this news in.
The home team is at least a -290 favorite, the Rockies are a big +250 or more underdog, and the run total is 8 or 8 1/2 depending upon your sportsbook. Friars’ management has sent the message that they’re “all in” for this season and want to make a serious run for a championship.
Kuhl Can’t Keep Consistency
Starter Chad Kuhl has had a “zig-zag” kind of season, pitching well in the months of April and June but then struggling in May and July.
The veteran righty relies on his sinker and avoiding hard contact, but wasn’t very successful in his five starts last month with a Rocky Mountain high ERA of 8.71 and WHIP of 2.18 – plus an opposing hitters’ batting average of .348.
For the season his numbers aren’t as bad, with a 4.59 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP in 19 starts and 98 innings with 72 strikeouts.
And tonight he gets the dubious honor to go against one of the best lineups in baseball, with Juan Soto and Josh Bell (left-handed and switch hitter). In his last five starts he’s also surrendered seven home runs and 14 walks in just 20.2 innings.
Snell Snapping Out Of Early Slump
Blake Snell looks like he’s starting to regain his 2018 form and become the pitcher the Padres thought he could be. After a rough April through June, the southpaw had an excellent July.
With 5 starts and 25.2 innings, he posted a 2.81 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP, striking out 40 and walking just 15. Snell has pitched much better at home with a 4.09 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, compared to 4.82 and 1.57 away from Petco Park.
The southpaw has faced the Rockies three times, twice at Coors Field and once at home. He didn’t pitch well at altitude – no shame in that game, as a lot of pitchers don’t – but did have a good outing versus Colorado on June 12th, where he went 6.0 innings and gave up two hits, two earned runs, struck out six and walked three.
San Diego Padres vs Colorado Rockies Prediction
It’s difficult to find much value on the money or run lines given the high price on the Padres, and I don’t trust the Rockies hitting on the road or their bullpen.
Blake Snell is in much better current form than Chad Kuhl, and the Rox righty has given up at least three earned runs in his last five starts. Plus, Kuhl hasn’t gone more than 5.0 innings in any of his July outings.
Petco Park and the Padres should have extra energy tonight with the debut of Soto and Bell. That’s why I’ll take San Diego 1st 5 innings over total runs scored.
Prediction: Padres 1st 5 Innings Over 2.5 Total Runs Scored
