San Diego Padres vs New York Mets Analysis

The New York Mets are in southern California to play the San Diego Padres in the second of a three game series.

Last night, the Mets took game one 11-5 as they roughed up Blake Snell for seven hits and four earned runs in 4.0 innings. Tonight it’s a battle of right-handers as Tajuan Walker goes against veteran Yu Darvish.

New York Mets Betting Preview

Tajuan Walker has started the year well for the Metropolitans, filling in the starting pitching gap with the absence of Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer.

In eight starts and 40.2 innings, the right-hander has compiled a 2.88 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP, giving up just 13 walks and two home runs – but only striking out 21. That’s one strikeout every two innings, a very low rate for a major league pitcher.

He’s pitching more to contact and has gotten away with it in most starts this year. The advanced analytics show there could be some negative regression for Walker soon. He has a hard-hit rate of 44.8% and an expected ERA of 4.38 – a full 1.50 higher than his actual ERA.

However, Walker has also allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts. As long as he can avoid giving up the long ball, the Mets righty should be fine.

He matches up well against a Padres lineup with the 4th worst OPS and the lowest number of home runs (22) against right-handed pitching.

The Mets are hitting really well this year, especially against right-handers with a 2nd best OPS of .761. They’ve scored a lot of runs the last two weeks, crossing the plate 103 times in 14 games. This stretch included one shutout and another one-run game versus the Dodgers.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

Yu Darvish has been solid in his 2022 campaign. In 10 starts and 60.1 innings he’s compiled a 4.03 ERA, an impressive 1.09 WHIP with 48 strikeouts, allowing 15 walks and five home runs.

He’s coming off a below average start June 1 in St. Louis, where he gave up seven hits and five earned runs in 7.2 innings, struck out four and allowed two walks and a home run.

The Padres have mainly relied on pitching for their success this year, as they miss the presence of star shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr. They have a 24th best OPS of .668 and a team average of .233.

San Diego Padres vs New York Mets Prediction

This is a Mets team playing with a lot of confidence and hitting the cover off the baseball. Like they say on Wall Street, “The trend is your friend.” And the last two weeks, they’re on a red-hot trend at the plate – scoring at least five runs in nine of their last 11 games.

While Darvish is a solid, experienced pitcher who matches up well against Walker, I won’t stand in the way of this Mets freight train that put up 11 runs last night. I’ll take the Mets on the moneyline.
