San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Analysis
The San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants in the rubber match of their three game series. The visitors took game one Monday night, and the home team took game two 7-4 Tuesday night behind a three-run jack from Manny Machado in the bottom of the ninth.
Right-hander Jakob Junis will take the hill for San Fran, and southpaw Sean Manaea starts for the Friars. First pitch in Petco Park is scheduled for 4:10 PM EDT.
Giant Inconsistency Problem
San Francisco has been an up-and-down team this season, plagued by injuries to position players and pitchers. But they also haven’t gotten the performance in 2022 that they got from key players last year.
The Giants hitters have been patient at the plate, with the 4th most walks of any team in baseball. And while their team average isn’t great at .235, they have relied on patience and the long ball to drive their offense with the 10th most home runs in MLB.
Jakob Junis has pitched fairly well for San Francisco this year… when he’s been healthy, which hasn’t been that often. The right-hander has a 4-3 record with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 10 starts and 62.0 innings. His control has been excellent as he’s only walked 14 hitters, an average of about two free passes per nine innings.
He faced the Padres once this year at Oracle Park back on May 20. Junis went 6.0 innings and gave up seven hits, four earned runs, one home run and struck out two.
Are The Padres Bats Back?
Starter Sean Manaea hasn’t pitched as well in 2022 as he has in past seasons. He has a 6-6 record with a 4.74 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Home runs and walks have been an issue, as he’s given up almost one long fly per start, and about four free passes per nine innings. Both are higher than you’d like to see from a major league starter.
The Padres lineup seems to have gotten some of their swagger back with 11 hits and seven runs in last night’s win. And it looks like they shook off the hangover from last weekend’s Dodger series.
After the Padres bullpen gave up three runs in the top of the ninth – which included two bases-loaded walks – and the Giants gave up a three-run homer to Machado in the bottom of the ninth, I trust both of these bullpens as much as gas station sushi. That means not very much.
San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction
Junis is a pitch-to-contact guy who tries to avoid hard contact, but that will be a tall order against a confident and dangerous Padres lineup. The Giants righty usually doesn’t go more than five innings in most starts.
Manaea isn’t the pitcher he was last year, and the Giants have the 4th best OPS versus left-handers in the last 30 days. They also have the most home runs in this category with 19.
It’s difficult to pick a side as I can’t rely on either bullpen or starting pitcher. I think last night’s 9th inning fireworks will carry over to Wednesday afternoon. That’s why I’ll take the over 8.5 runs scored.
Prediction: Over 8.5 Total Runs Scored
