San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis
The San Francisco Giants host the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Oracle Park in the first of a four game series.
The Snakes took two of three from the Rockies in Coors Field while the Giants swept three games from the Pirates at home. Madison Bumgarner will take the hill for Arizona, and San Fran will send Alex Cobb to the mound, first pitch is scheduled for 9:45 PDT.
The Giants have a 57-57 record and are 6.0 games out of the final wild card spot, and Arizona is 53-61 and 10.0 games behind the Phillies for a wild card berth.
Bumgarner Getting Burnt Out
While MadBum isn’t the pitcher he used to be, he’s still been a serviceable southpaw starter for the D-Backs. He’s put up a 6-11 record with a 4.13 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, and struck out 88 in 122 innings.
The D-Backs haven’t been a consistent hitting team, but when they make hard contact, good things have happened. They’re 20th best in OPS, 26th in team batting average but 12th in home runs.
However, they have improved hitting right-handers as they have the 11th best OPS and are 14th in team average versus righties in the last 30 days
Giants Call On Cobb
San Francisco is where we thought they’d be at this time of the year: in the race for a playoff berth. However, they haven’t played as well as most analysts thought they would.
The pitching and hitting have both been middle of the pack, as the Giants are 17th in staff ERA and 13th in team OPS. The Achilles’ heel of this team has been the bullpen, which is in the bottom five in MLB for both ERA and WHIP.
Starter Alex Cobb has had a fair-to-middlin’ season for the Giants. In 18 starts and 93.1 innings he’s posted a 4.15 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 100 strikeouts.
He’s faced Arizona twice this season on July 6th at Chase Field, then at home on July 11 and the starts were almost identical. In each start the right-hander went 6.0 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs.
Cobb has also pitched well at home, even though his record doesn’t reflect it. In 11 home starts he’s posted a 2-6 record with a 3.00 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, which is a sign of poor run support from his offense.
San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
Arizona plays its first game after playing in the hiiters’ paradise of Coors Field this weekend. And now they come to one of the 10 most pitcher-friendly yards in MLB, which will take a little bit of time to adjust to.
While the Giants are a better team, I don’t think they’re a -190 favorite against an improving D-backs squad. Especially with a San Fran bullpen that I trust as much as gas station sushi. That’s why I’ll go with the 1st 5 innings Arizona team total under 1.5 runs scored.
Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks 1st 5 Innings Team Total Under 1.5 Runs Scored
