San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies are in northern California to play the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in the second of a three game series.

The Rockies surprised their hosts in game one by a count of 5-3 behind a surprisingly good start from German Marquez. Right hander Antonio Senzatela gets the start versus southpaw Alex Wood.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

If you can boil the #1 cause of Antonio Senzatela’s pitching problems in 2022, it’s that he hasn’t missed enough bats.

In eight starts and 35.0 innings, he has a 5.40 ERA with a 1.97 WHIP, and a paltry 14 strikeouts – just over three Ks per nine innings of work.

And in seven of his eight starts, he’s given up at least seven base hits… and opposing hitters’ batting average against the Rockies righty is .401.

On a positive note, he’s only given up eight walks and three home runs, so he hasn’t given away many “cheap” runs, but it’s obvious with these kinds of numbers that he needs to improve or he won’t stay in the starting rotation for much longer.

The Rockies still hit left-handed pitching really, really well, with a 2nd best OPS of .794 and a league best batting average of .289.

What’s interesting is they’re in the bottom 10 of home runs hit against southpaws. Although they haven’t hit as many long flies as in years past, they’re still getting the job done at the plate.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

Starter Alex Wood has faced the Rockies twice this year, once at home and once on the road, with mixed results. The May 10 start at Oracle Park he went 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits, zero earned runs, walked two and struck out four.

His May 16 outing at Coors Field he went 4.1 innings, gave up six hits, three earned runs, struck out five, walked one and hit a batter.

In his 10 starts and 48.1 innings, he’s compiled a 4.66 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP with 50 strikeouts. He’s only given up five home runs and issued 15 walks, which comes to just less than one long fly and just under three walks per nine innings.

Wood has pitched a lot worse at Oracle Park than he has on the road. In four starts and 17.2 innings, he has a 6.11 ERA, a 1.92 WHIP, scattered 28 hits, issued six walks and struck out 17. But his best home start was May 10th against the Rockies.

The Giants have hit right-handed pitching well this year, with a 9th best OPS of .726 and team batting average of .244. And they have a 6th best team OPS of .731 with an average of .243.

San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies Prediction

This game preview is very similar to last night’s game, where you have two hittable pitchers going against two good lineups.

The run total of 9 seems just about right, and the Giants haven’t played as well the last time the Rox visited Oracle Park.

I don’t have a strong side or total, but my best bet for this game is a pitching prop: Antonio Senzatela to allow over 2.5 earned runs.

Prediction: Antonio Senzatela to allow over 2.5 Earned Runs
