San Francisco Giants vs Kansas City Royals Analysis

The Kansas City Royals visit Oracle Park to play the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three game set, with right hander Brady Singer going against southpaw Alex Wood.

The Royals just split a four game series with the Orioles at home where a lot of runs were scored. The Giants just swept the Dodgers in a three game home series.

San Fran is a favorite at -170, the Royals are a +150 dog and the run total is 7.5. I would have expected the Giants to be at least -200 favorites, and this line seems a little low given these clubs’ recent games.

Either the betting market isn’t giving the home team their proper respect and value, or this will be a closer game than most people think.

Kansas City Royals Betting Preview

Starter Brady Singer has been a relief pitcher who’s entered into the starting rotation, but with mixed results. In eight games, five starts and 35.1 innings, Singer has put up a 4.33 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 35 strikeouts.

However, in his last three starts and 15.1 innings, the right-hander has given up 22 hits, 13 earned runs and six home runs. That’s not a good recent trend going against a Giants lineup who can make pitchers pay for their mistakes.

While their pitching may not be great, the Royals’ offense has finally come to life. In their last five games (four against Baltimore, one versus Toronto), KC has plated 34 runs. We’ll see if that good hitting can translate from Kauffman Stadium to Oracle Park.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

The Giants pitching may finally be out of its slump, as they held the Dodgers to just four runs in their three game weekend series.

Their staff ERA has improved to 19th best at 4.06 with a 1.29 WHIP, and the bullpen now has a 21st best ERA of 4.20 with a 1.33 WHIP.

Starter Alex Wood is having a better season than his numbers would indicate, with a 4.23 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 11 starts and 55.1 innings.

In nine of these starts, he’s given up just three runs or less – but he doesn’t usually go very deep in games, or past the 5th inning.

San Francisco Giants vs Kansas City Royals Prediction

This seems like kind of a trap game after the Giants swept LA, and I’d like to take the Royals on the run line.

If there’s any game where KC has a shot to surprise what could be a “fat and sassy” (or overconfident) Giants club and get a win, this is it.

However, I don’t trust the Royals bullpen to keep any game close with a 3rd worst ERA of 4.80. And while they’ve played better as of late, the Giants’ pen for the season is still 21st in reliever ERA.

Even for Oracle Park the run total seems a bit low, especially with two starting pitchers with 4-plus ERAs and who don’t usually go past the 5th inning.

With Singer giving up home runs like Oprah gives away new cars. That’s why I’ll lean to the over 7.5 runs scored.

Prediction: Over 7.5 Runs Scored
