San Francisco Giants vs Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis

The San Francisco Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Oracle Park in the third game of a four-game set. The Dodgers won last night’s contest 9-5, and will send southpaw Julio Urias to the mound versus right hander Alex Cobb, first pitch is scheduled for 9:45 PM EDT / 6:45 PDT.

Big Blue has owned San Fran this season, winning eight of eleven games and the last six since play resumed after the All-Star break. The Giants swept the Dodgers in a three game home series back on June 10-12, but that’s the only success they’ve had.

Urias Owns Giants This Season

Starter Julio Urias has pitched very well in 2022 and against the Giants. In three starts and 18.0 innings versus this division rival, he’s given up a combined two earned runs, struck out 19 batters and only walked two.

On the season, the southpaw has made 20 starts in 109.2 innings with a 2.71 ERA, an excellent 0.98 WHIP and 103 strikeouts.

The Dodgers have the highest team OPS and lowest team ERA in MLB, and their bullpen has the sixth lowest ERA. Not much else to comment on those numbers, they show that LA is performing like we thought they would before the season – as one of the best rosters and teams in baseball.

They didn’t make many moves at the trade deadline, picking up slugger Joey Gallo from the Yankees for minor league pitcher Clayton Beeter.

Giant Inconsistency Issue

Right-hander Alex Cobb has had a decent but not spectacular season for the Giants. In 16 starts and 82 innings, he’s posted a 4.06 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and an impressive 85 strikeouts – that’s more than one per inning.

Cobb hasn’t been an ‘innings eater’ until last month, where he went at least 6.0 innings in four of his last five starts. Given the state of the Giants’ shaky bullpen, they’ll need him to go as many innings as possible.

The Giants’ hitting has improved in recent weeks as their team OPS is now 13th best at .711 with a team batting average of .234.

What they may lack in consistency at the plate, they make up for in power as they have the 10th most home runs in MLB. San Fran did make one move before the deadline, adding Mets 3B J.D. Davis to their roster.

San Francisco Giants vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction

Neither team did much with their roster this year, so I’ll stick with the season-long trends for these teams – which definitely favor the Dodgers. LA is playing really good baseball and have won the last six games versus the Giants.

I won’t try to catch the “falling knife” and figure out when the home team will break the trend. That’s why I’ll take the Dodgers on the moneyline.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers Moneyline

P.S. – Wanted to acknowledge the passing of former Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, who was one of (if not the) best to ever call Major League Baseball games. He was the voice of the Dodgers for 67 years, calling it a career after the 2016 season. Deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the Scully and Dodger families.
