San Francisco Giants vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres visit the San Francisco Giants Wednesday afternoon to finish their three-game series at Oracle Park.

The Padres won 4-2 on Monday, and the Giants rolled on Tuesday night 13-2. Yu Darvish got shelled for nine earned runs and didn’t make it out of the second inning.

Sean Manaea comes off an outstanding opening start against Arizona, with seven no-hit innings, seven strikeouts and only allowed one walk. It looks like the Friars made a wise move to shore up their starting rotation.

Without Fernando Tatis Jr. until July, we knew their offense would probably struggle at least a little bit. And that’s exactly what’s played out to start the season. In the off-season they stacked their lineup with a lot of power hitters – like masher Luke Voit from the Yankees – who also swing and miss quite a bit.

Hitters Struggling to Get on Base

The Padres are like many teams in major league baseball, with most hitters going for the home run instead of base hits.

Today’s game has evolved to a lot of strikeouts, long fly ball outs and home runs, instead of traditional “small ball,” where teams got runners in base, stole bases and moved them over.

This is another reason for low-scoring games to start the year. Plus, most hitters are struggling to get their timing and swing down. In a few weeks, most hitters should be in better form, and we’ll see higher-scoring games.

Giants Rely on Solid Pitching

The Giants’ Logan Webb also did well in his Opening Day start against the Marlins. The right-hander allowed one earned run in six-plus innings of work, scattering five hits, striking out three and issuing one walk.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: The Giants pitching has been solid to start the year, but with the exception of yesterday’s game, the offense hasn’t been great. Playing in a pitcher-friendly yard like Oracle Park doesn’t help, especially in April in San Francisco.

San Francisco Giants vs San Diego Padres Prediction

Betting Recommendation: The Padres have an edge in starting pitching with Manaea over Webb. I’ll take the Padres on the 1st 5 innings money line.

Prediction: San Diego Padres 1st 5 innings moneyline
