Seattle Mariners vs Houston Astros Analysis

The Houston Astros travel west to T-Mobile Park to play the Seattle Mariners in the first of a three game series. Right hander Jose Urquidy takes the mound against southpaw Marco Gonzales, first pitch scheduled for 10:10 Eastern time.

Houston comes off an impressive double-header sweep of the Yankees at home, while Friday’s tilt will be the Mariners first game back from the All-Star break.

Mariners Poised to Extend Win Streak

Seattle was one of the hottest teams in baseball before the ASG, winning 14 in a row, which took their record to an impressive 51-42.

The M’s are now in the mix to contend for a wildcard spot, although they’re still 10.0 games behind Houston for the lead in the AL West.

Marco Gonzales is not an overpowering pitcher to say the least, with just 53 Ks in 100.1 innings. However, he’s pitched pretty well so far in this 2022 season. In 18 starts he has a 3.50 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP (higher than you’d like to see) and a 5-9 record.

He’s faced the Astros three times this season (twice at home), and hasn’t given up more than three runs in each outing.

His home starts have been very solid, going at least 7.0 innings in each and giving up a combined nine hits and three earned runs. So Gonzales knows how to pitch against this formidable Houston lineup.

Astros Open Second Half With Two Wins

The Astros haven’t missed a beat to re-start the season, with two wins against the Yankees at Minute Maid Park. Houston has a 6th best OPS at .740, and the lowest ERA for both their full pitching staff and bullpen.

They’re playing great baseball right now and if they keep playing at this level through the regular season, we should look forward to see Houston and the Yankees face off again in the playoffs.

Urquidy has been a decent but not spectacular starter for Houston in the first half. He has a 4.09 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP in 94.0 innings with an 8-4 record and 74 strikeouts – a little lower than you’d like to see from a major league starter.

The right-hander has given up 20 walks and 16 home runs, and the long ball rate is higher than you’d like to see at just over 1.5 homers per nine innings. And he’s not exactly a road warrior with a 5.20 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 10 starts, and a .279 opposing team batting average.

Seattle Mariners vs Houston Astros Prediction

Although I’m not a huge Marco Gonzales fan and Houston can hit left-handers hard, I like him better than Jose Urquidy, who’s probably one of (if not the) weakest starter in the Astros rotation.

He’s a pitcher in the truest sense of the word, who knows how to get hitters out and avoid most hard contact.

Seattle is looking forward to this series as they can make up some ground on their division rival. And the visiting team could be a little bit “fat and sassy” after yesterday’s big wins. Houston has the lowest bullpen ERA in MLB.

While Seattle is no slouch with the 8th lowest. Both the 1st 5 and full game moneylines are about even money, and I think the Mariners should be ready to play from the first pitch. That’s why I’ll take Seattle on the 1st 5 innings moneyline.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners 1st 5 Innings Moneyline
