Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels Analysis
The Seattle Mariners host the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a three game series. Southpaw Robbie Ray gets the start against right-hander Patrick Sandoval, first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EDT / 7:10 PDT at T-Mobile Park.
These are two teams going in opposite directions, as the Halos are basically playing out the string 17 games below .500 – and the Mariners are in the playoff hunt.
Streaks have defined both club’s seasons as the Angels started the year 27-17, but then went on an extended losing streak that cost manager Joe Madden his job.
The Mariners weren’t playing well to start the year, but got on a 14-game winning streak before the All-Star break that vaulted them into contention for the playoffs.
Los Angeles Losing Woes
Patrick Sandoval is in the running for the Angels’ second best starting pitcher behind Shohei Ohtani. He’s been fairly consistent and has kept the Halos in most of his starts.
In 17 outings and 89.2 innings, he’s posted a 3.61 ERA and a higher-than-normal 1.48 WHIP. The right-hander has also avoided a lot of hard contact, as he has 97 strikeouts, 41 walks and just four home runs.
Poor plate discipline and a bad bullpen are the two biggest reasons the Angels haven’t lived up to expectations in 2022.
They’re a talented hitting team who can hit plenty of home runs, as we saw Thursday afternoon in Anaheim against the A’s. However, they lead the league in strikeouts and have the fourth-lowest On-Base Percentage at just .300.
Ray Paying Off
Robbie Ray is finally pitching like the $115 million man the Mariners picked up in the off-season, although his year-long numbers may not reflect it. In 21 starts and 122.2 innings, he’s posted a 4.11 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 139 strikeouts, more than one per inning.
He’s struggled in his last two starts versus the Astros, but made quality starts of at least 6.0 innings with three earned runs or less in the seven outings before facing Houston.
The emergence of rookie Julio Rodriguez is a big reason why Seattle has improved this season, along with improved pitching. He’s probably the odds-on favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award, and has had some baseball folks making comparisons of him to Ken Griffey Jr.
Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels Prediction
Seattle has the starting pitching edge, the Angels don’t hit left-handed pitching that well and they’re up against one of the better southpaws in MLB. This team goes on the road after they just belted seven home runs in their home yard… but still lost the game to Oakland by one.
The Mariners bullpen is in the top 10 in ERA, while LA’s pen is in the bottom half in this category – and their lack of success is a big reason why the Angels are 17 games below .500 in August.
The home team has more momentum, and more to play for than the visitors. That’s why I’ll take Seattle on the run line.
Prediction: Seattle Run Line (-1.5)
