Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels Analysis

The Los Angeles Angels travel up the west coast to T-Mobile Park to play the Seattle Mariners in the first of a four game series. Right-handers Shoehei Ohtani (4-4, 3,64 ERA) and George Kirby (1-1, 3.65 ERA) will take the mound.

The Angels are -125 favorites, while the Mariners are a +105 dog, and the run total is 7 in what should be a great pitching matchup.

Both teams are pretty similar to each other in win-loss records and statistics. Los Angeles is 29-35 while Seattle is 28-35, good for 3rd and 4th place in the AL West where Houston is running away with the division. They’re average or slightly below average in hitting, pitching and bullpen ERA.

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

The Angels come into the Emerald City with a 2-8 record in their last 10 ball games, and the Mariners are 5-5. Even after the club fired manager Joe Madden, it hasn’t been enough to get the team back on the winning track.

Starter Shohei Ohtani isn’t putting up MVP-like numbers on the mound this year, but they’re still solid. In 10 starts and 54.1 innings, he has a 3.64 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 71 strikeouts – that’s 11.98 Ks per nine innings.

Seattle Mariners Betting Preview

Starter George Kirby has pitched fairly well in his rookie season. The right hander has seven starts, 37.0 innings with a 3.65 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP with 35 strikeouts.

His control has been good, only giving up four walks – but he’s had a problem with the long ball, giving up four home runs in his last two starts.

Although he’s had a limited sample size of games, Kirby has shown a pattern to have a bad game or two then come back with a good one. Based on this data, he’s due for a better outing tonight facing a very strikeout-prone Angels team.

Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels Prediction

Even with Ohtani getting the start, I don’t trust the Angels bullpen enough to close out any game. And their lineup is also tied for 1st in strikeouts – not a hitting stat to be proud of.

Neither team has great hitting as a team or bullpen, even though the Angels have two of the best players in baseball in Trout and Ohtani.

I think this game is basically a coin flip and the Halos may be slightly overrated because they’re a Los Angeles team and last year’s MVP is getting the start.

I’m not running to the window to bet on this game, but I think there’s a little bit of value on the home team and I’ll take the Mariners on the moneyline.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners Moneyline
