Seattle Mariners vs New York Yankees Analysis
The Seattle Mariners host the New York Yankees in the first of a three game set Monday night at T-Mobile Park. The visitors lost all three games to the Cardinals in St. Louis, while the M’s split four games at home versus the Angels.
Jameson Taillon takes the bump for the Yankees and Logan Gilbert gets the start for Seattle, first pitch scheduled for 10:10 PM EDT.
Both teams are at the top of the American League, as the Yanks have the best record in the AL. However, it’s been a rough week for the pinstripers, as they’ve lost five of their last six.
If the playoffs started today, the M’s would be in the postseason as they have the third and final wild card berth. And they just played a three game set last week in Yankee Stadium where Seattle took two of three games.
Regressing Yankees
Jameson Taillon just faced Seattle in his last start on August 2, and had some control issues. In 4.2 innings he only gave up two hits and struck out six, but allowed four walks and five earned runs.
He’s done a good job of missing bats this year as the right hander has a 3.96 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 21 starts and 113.2 innings with 98 strikeouts and a .252 opposing batting average.
The Yankees hit well against almost every kind of pitcher, and have the 3rd best OPS against right handers and the 2nd highest OPS overall. And they hit Logan Gilbert hard in his last start on August 2nd, roughing up the righty for seven hits, six earned runs and three home runs in 5.1 innings.
Pitching has been the cause of New York’s recent woes, as they’ve given up seven or more runs in four of their last seven games. But they still have solid season-long numbers with the third lowest ERA in baseball, and the 2nd lowest bullpen ERA.
Gilbert Getting It For Seattle
Logan Gilbert has pitched well for most of this season, although he had his worst outing of the year last week in Yankee Stadium. In 22 starts and 128.1 innings, he’s posted a 3.09 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 120 strikeouts.
Hitting for Seattle this year has been hit or miss and not always consistent, even though Julio Rodriguez caught fire before the All-Star break.
For most of the year, the pitching staff has carried this team, but if they can be more consistent at the plate, this team could do some damage the rest of the regular season and into the postseason.
Seattle Mariners vs New York Yankees Prediction
This will be the second time in less than a week that both teams have faced the opposing pitcher, which is usually an edge for the hitters.
The visitors have been in a recent slump, losing five of their last six games, and are due for some positive regression.
Although Gilbert has been in better recent form than Taillon, the Mariners offense is too inconsistent to back in this spot. That’s why I’ll lean to the Yankees on the moneyline.
