Seattle Mariners vs Texas RangersAnalysis
The Texas Rangers take on the Seattle Mariners in the second of a three game set. The M’s hung on late to get the 4-3 win Monday night, and tonight it’ll be a battle of righties with Dane Dunning going against George Kirby. First pitch at T-Mobile Park is scheduled for 10:10 Eastern / 7:10 Pacific Time.
Dunning Can’t Find Consistency
The best way to describe Dane Dunning in 2022 is that he’s been consistently inconsistent. In 18 starts and 95.2 innings, he’s compiled a 4.42 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP and 84 strikeouts.
Control has been above average, giving up 37 walks and just 11 home runs – that’s just under 3.5 free passes and just over one long fly per nine innings. His strikeout numbers have tapered off quite a bit in his last seven starts, as he hasn’t struck out over 5 hitters in that stretch.
This could be a case of wearing down before the All-Star break, but Dunning has had two weeks and two days since his last outing. He should be more than rested for tonight’s start in the Pacific Northwest.
However, most of his road starts this year haven’t been very successful. In 9 starts and 45.2 innings away from Globe Life Field, he’s put up a 5.52 ERA with a 1.69 WHIP.
He did have a quality start back on May 8 versus the Yankees, where he went 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits, one earned run, allowed three walks and struck out 5.
Kirby Keeping it Together in Rookie Season
George Kirby has had a pretty good rookie season in Seattle’s starting rotation. He’s had some ups and downs as all young pitchers will, but his numbers have been solid.
In 64.1 innings and 12 starts, he’s accrued a 3.78 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 62 strikeouts – almost one per inning. Control has been good as he’s allowed nine walks and 12 home runs year-to-date. The southpaw is also well-rested, with his last start on July 8th.
Seattle is a team that’s similar to Texas – they rely heavily on the long ball to produce runs. They’re just 23rd in scoring at 4.14 runs per game and a so-so team batting average of .238. However, they have a 10th best On-Base Percentage at .318 and are 13th in home runs with 106 in 97 games.
Seattle Mariners vs Texas Rangers Prediction
Both starting pitchers have had an extended rest, and the question is if it’ll help or hurt their performance in tonight’s game. Kirby’s recent form is better than Dunning’s, and the M’s have had the Rangers’ number, winning all but two head-to-head matchups in 2022.
The law of averages says the Rangers are due for a win, but as they say on Wall Street, “the trend is your friend.” I’ll stay friendly with Seattle’s trend of success against Texas, and take the Mariners on the moneyline.
