Tampa Bay Rays vs Boston Red Sox Analysis
The Tampa Bay Rays can claim victory of this four game series over the Boston Red Sox after winning the first two games at Tropicana Field. Last night the Red Sox blew a 2-0 lead after a solid debut for Chris Sale and ultimately lost 3-2.
The Rays now occupy the top spot in the American League Wild Card standings with only a half game lead over the Red Sox.
Tampa Bay will start potential Cy Young award candidate Shane McClanahan, while Boston turns to another rookie in Josh Winckowski. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Boston Needs to Bounce Back
Chris Sale looked strong in his 2022 debut with five scoreless innings as he exited the game with a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately sloppy defense and poor base running cost them the lead and they ultimately lost 3-2.
Tampa scored the tying and game winning runs on throwing errors by Matt Strahm and Franchy Cordero. Bobby Dalbec hit an RBI triple in a game that didn’t provide much offense. On most nights the Red Sox lineup is outstanding as they rank 4th in runs scored and 7th in OPS (.740).
Red Sox Nation turns to rookie righty Josh Winckowski in hopes to take back the top Wild Card spot. He is 3-3 on the season with a 4.35 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. After a handful of quality efforts, Winckowski was touched up for six runs in five innings last time out.
Rays Now Lead AL Wildcard
The Tampa Bay Rays won yet another game over the Boston Red Sox with a 3-2 comeback victory. Corey Kluber tossed six innings while allowing only two runs on four hits. The bullpen put together three scoreless innings to finish the game.
Harold Ramirez went 2 for 4 and Francisco Mejia drove in the only official RBI as the Rays scored the other two runs on throwing errors. At 47-40, Tampa Bay know holds a slim half game lead over Boston in the American League Wild Card standings.
The Rays offense has struggled all season long but injuries to key hitters haven’t helped matters. They rank 23rd in OPS (.687) and 22nd in runs scored. However they have been playing without hitters like Wander Franco, Kevin Kiermaier and Mike Zunino.
Southpaw Shane McClanahan has become the Tampa Bay ace over the course of the past two seasons. He is 9-3 with a 1.73 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. He held the Cincinnati Reds to one run in six innings with eight strikeouts in his last outing.
Tampa Bay Rays vs Boston Red Sox Prediction
The Tampa Bay Rays are heavily favored with a money line set at -190, while the Boston Red Sox sit at +160 with a total of only 7. This is tough pick to make from a side perspective as one team controls the pitching advantage, while the other had dominant pitching with limited offense.
The total is an obviously a reflection of how filthy McClanahan has been. However the Red Sox team total is only 2.5 with manageable juice at -135.
I know the Trop is a tough place to score and McClanahan has been dominant, but Boston scored two on him in seven innings in their last head-to-head meeting. This team total is just to low for such an explosive lineup.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox Team Total Over 2.5 -135 DK
