Tampa Bay Rays vs St. Louis Cardinals Analysis

The St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays go head-to-head for the 2nd of game of their three game interleague series on Wednesday evening. The Rays will have the opportunity to win the series after a 4-2 tenth inning victory yesterday.

St. Louis will turn to the young southpaw Packy Naughton to even the series. The Rays will send veteran righty Cory Kluber to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/ 4:10 PST.

Cardinals Continue to Chase Brewers

The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to get back on track after losing 4-2 in the tenth inning. Dakota Hudson was dominant, with seven innings of one run baseball with six strikeouts.

The bullpen held it down until the tenth inning where Drew Vergagen allowed two runs and took the loss. Paul Goldschmidt stayed hot with a double.

Even after the loss, the Cards still sit only a game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for 1st place in the National League Central. St. Louis boasts one of the leagues top scoring offenses with 4.84 runs a game with a .720 OPS that ranks 11th.

Their bullpen ERA is just above average at 3.79. The young lefty Packy Naughton will be making his third spot start of the season. It’s not going to be a long outing as he has only lasted 2.1 and 3.1 innings in his first two starts. He has a 3.09 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 11.2 innings of work.

Rays Look to Settle Series

The Rays have the opportunity to win this three game set in the second game after prevailing 4-2 in the 10th inning yesterday.

Jeffrey Springs threw six scoreless innings while allowing six hits and striking out five. Shortstop Taylor Wells hit a three-run blast to account for most of the runs.

Tampa Bay has a 32-23 record, which sits them one game behind the Toronto Blue Jays for 2nd place in the American League East.

The Rays offense has been underwhelming as they only score 4.13 runs a game while ranking 24th with a .668 OPS. Tampa turns to veteran righty Cory Kluber.

Kluber is 2-2 with a 3.73 ERA and 1.13 WHP across 50.2 innings pitched. He threw six innings and only allowing one run in his last start against the Texas Rangers.

Tampa Bay Rays vs St. Louis Cardinals Prediction

The money line is set at -137 for the Tampa Bay Rays and +127 for the St. Louis Cardinals with a total of 7.5. The Rays have a tremendous advantage with Kluber over Naughton.

Naughton is going to pitch maybe three innings max, so they will be asking a lot out of a mediocre bullpen.

The Rays have struggled offensively but should be able to take advantage of the Cardinals pitching situation. Kluber should be able to limit the Cards bats and the Rays have the bullpen edge.

This is a tough one but I will play it safe and make a small play on the Rays money line. However it is just about at my maximum juice but I don’t see another way to look here.

Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline -137
