Texas Rangers vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis
The Texas Rangers host the Baltimore Orioles in the second of a three game set at Globe Life Field. The O’s took game one of the series last night by a score of 7-2.
We’ll see a pair of right-handers on the bump tonight as Jordan Lyles goes against Spencer Howard, first pitch scheduled for 8:05 PM EDT / 5:05 PDT in Arlington.
Lyles Looking Sub-Par
The Orioles are the surprise team of the American League with a 52-51 record, just 2.5 games behind Tampa Bay for the third wild card spot.
The pitching has carried the team most of the year with a 15th best ERA of 3.91, and the bullpen has been outstanding with the 4th lowest ERA in baseball.
Baltimore’s offense hasn’t been much to write home about, but has improved as the season has gone along. They’re 21st in OPS at .688 with a .234 team batting average, and 18th in OPS versus righties at .694.
Starter Jordan Lyles is coming back to where he pitched last season, and didn’t perform very well. The right-hander had 30 starts and 180 innings and put up a 5.15 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP, and allowed 38 home runs and 56 walks.
Lyles has improved somewhat on those numbers this year, in 21 starts and 118.1 innings he has a 4.56 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP with 97 strikeouts.
Howard Showing Signs of Improvements
Spencer Howard is a young pitcher that’s improved during this time with Texas this season. He made three appearances and one start with the Rangers back in April and struggled quite a bit, with a 12.15 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 6 innings of work.
After some time with their AAA club in Round Rock, Howard returned to Arlington in July, where he did a lot better. In five starts and 23 innings, he’s put up a 4.18 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP, struck out 14, allowed 10 walks and four home runs.
The Rangers are about an average hitting club this season with a 16th best OPS of .700, and a team batting average of .239. They’re 25th against right-handers with an OPS of .680 and average of .238, and they live and die with the long ball, as they’re tied for 8th in MLB with the Twins for homers at 128.
Texas Rangers vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
It’s difficult to trust either one of these starters given their numbers and performance, but I do like the Orioles bullpen more than the Rangers.
Jordan Lyles hasn’t pitched very well away from the more pitcher-friendly Camden Yards, with a 6-plus ERA in 12 starts and has allowed 15 home runs. Spencer Howard has also had his share of problems with the long ball, and gave up six hits and four earned runs in Baltimore back on July 5th.
I expect runs to be scored Chicago-style in this game: Early and often. That’s why I’ll lean to the 1st 5 innings over total runs scored.
Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Over Total Runs Scored
