Texas Rangers vs Colorado Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies visit Globe Life Field to face the Texas Rangers in their home opener. Southpaw Austin Gomber takes the mound against Texas native Taylor Hearn.

Ride the Wave?

The Rox come off an impressive opening series, taking two of three from the NL West favorite Dodgers. The pitching was solid as the staff only gave up eight earned runs over three games, and the bats came to life Sunday with nine runs in the series finale.

These first road games of the year will be telling, as last year the team had a Jekyll-and-Hyde like difference playing at home versus away from Coors Field. Their home record of 48-33 was one of the best in MLB, but their road record of 26-54 was one of the worst. The Rockies will have to exorcise these road demons if they want to compete in the NL West.

Austin Gomber’s home-road splits are similar to his teammates. In 2021, the left-hander had a 4-8 road record with a 6.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP, and for the season had a 4.53 ERA with a respectable 1.24 WHIP.

The Bats Are Awake

Texas comes off an encouraging opening series in Toronto although they lost two of three. The Rangers offense came to life with 23 runs in three games, but the pitching was suspect, giving up 20 runs.

Six-foot-six Southpaw Taylor Hearn had a good Spring Training, and has a favorable matchup with a Rockies offense that only hit .219 on the road last season. The Royce City, Texas product grew up only 50 miles from the Rangers home park, and gets to start the home opener.

Globe Life Field is considered neutral as a hitter or pitcher-friendly park according to Bleacher Report, ranking right in the middle tied for No. 15 out of 30 teams.

Texas Rangers vs Colorado Rockies Prediction

Although the Rockies had a great weekend against Los Angeles, the hitters will face the “Coors Field hangover” in their first game away from home. It’s always a let-down because their home yard is considered the most hitter-friendly park in MLB (shocker, I know).

The Rockies’ pitching staff will have to improve on its sixth-worst road ERA of 4.99 of last year. I’m not from Missouri, but Colorado will have to “show me” they can duplicate their opening series home performance on the road. I’ll keep it simple and take Texas on the moneyline.
