Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics Analysis
The Texas Rangers host the Oakland Athletics in the first of a two game series. Texas had a home series last weekend, then flew to south Florida to split a double-header in Miami on Monday – then flew back to Arlington last night – while the A’s dropped three of four to the surging White Sox at home over the weekend.
A couple of young southpaws take the hill as Ken Waldichuk goes against Cole Ragans. First pitch at Globe Life Field is scheduled for 8:05 PM EDT / 5:05 PM PDT.
Both teams are out of playoff contention, so they’re taking a look at their young talent to see what they’ve got. Texas is a -145 favorite, Oakland a +122 underdog and the over/under is set at 8.5.
Oakland Over This Season
The A’s are a bad team and a sad baseball story, and there’s not much else to say that I haven’t said already.
The front office had a fire sale before the season started and let go of most of their best players, so it would be easier to move the team to Las Vegas. Oakland doesn’t hit or pitch that well, the best team stat I could find is that they’re 19th in team stolen bases.
Ken Waldichuk has pitched very well at the AA and AAA levels this season, with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 21 starts and 95 innings. He’s only had two major league starts and 10.0 innings with a 3.60 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
Ragans Makes Case For Role Next Season
The Rangers were a favorite of sharp bettors earlier in the season, but not any more. They’re kind of a baseball enigma, as it’s difficult to describe the identity of this team. Texas is 16th in team OPS, 17th in batting average, slightly below average in staff ERA, 8th in home runs and 1st in stolen bases.
This club also has the 6th most team strikeouts and is 24th in on-base percentage – those numbers will have to improve next year for the Rangers to be more competitive.
Martin Perez emerged as the team’s best starting pitcher and Jon Gray had better numbers away from Coors Field. However, injuries kept Gray from being a more consistent starter, with just 20 starts and 107 innings year-to-date.
Glenn Otto got better later in the season as he posted a sub-3.00 ERA in August; and Dane Dunning has pitched well in streaks, but needs to be more consistent at the major league level.
Cole Ragans has posted solid numbers with AA Frisco and AAA Round Rock this season. He has an 8-5 record, a 3.04 ERA plus a 1.12 WHIP in 18 starts and 94.2 innings. The southpaw has struck out 113, allowed 31 walks and 10 home runs. At the major league level he’s had five starts, 21.1 innings, a 3.80 ERA plus a 1.45 WHIP with a 0-2 record.
Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics Prediction
I give the starting pitching edge to Cole Ragans over Ken Waldichuk, but with yesterday’s double-header plus flying to south Florida and back in 24 hours, I’m not sure I trust the Rangers’ bullpen later in the game.
Texas hits southpaws pretty well, and the A’s haven’t hit any type of pitcher that well in 2022. This isn’t a game I’m running to the window or my mobile app to bet, but I’ll take the Rangers on the 1st 5 innings moneyline.
Prediction: Texas Rangers 1st 5 Innings Moneyline
