Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics Analysis
The Oakland A’s travel to Globe Life Field to take on the Texas Rangers in the second of a three game series. The home team took game one Monday night in a slugfest 10-8.
Before this series, the A’s come off a six game home stand where they took two of three from Toronto and dropped two of three to Houston. The Rangers had a successful home set against the Twins last weekend, winning two out of three.
Oakland Athletics Betting Preview
James Kaprelian’s 2022 statistics aren’t that impressive with a 1-5 record in 13 starts and a 5.06 ERA, with 41 strikeouts in 64.0 innings and a 1.39 WHIP. When you look through his game log though he’s pitched a lot better over his last four starts, giving up a combined seven earned runs in 22.2 innings – and no more than five hits in each outing.
However, the right-hander has given up too many walks, not missed enough bats and given up too much hard contact. Looking at his advanced analytics in Baseball Savant, he has lots of blue (bad) categories. He’s in the bottom 15th percentile among MLB pitchers in seven categories that include K%, BB%, Whiff Rate and Expected ERA.
The Oakland A’s hitting…. is still not good. They’re dead last in MLB with a .597 OPS and an anemic .209 team batting average. The Athletics’ pitching is a little better with a 24th lowest staff ERA at 4.33 and a 1.33 WHIP, and the bullpen is 22nd with a 4.30 ERA.
Texas Rangers Betting Preview
Rangers starter Glenn Otto doesn’t have great numbers, but has pitched better than expected. In eight of his 11 starts, he’s only given up two earned runs or less.
The other three starts he’s allowed four, six and eight earned runs – which gives him the 5-plus ERA for the year. He’s worked 51.1 innings with a 1.50 WHIP, 5.26 ERA with 49 strikeouts.
The right-hander’s biggest challenge this year has been walks, as he’s issued 32 free passes – which comes to over 5.5 walks per nine innings. More walks a game equal more pitches and fewer innings, that’s why Otto averages less than five innings per start.
Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics Prediction
Texas is about an average hitting team with a 16th best OPS of .700 and a .240 team batting average. Their offense has been powered mainly by the long ball, as the Rangers are 8th in MLB with 110 home runs. But they’re also good thieves on the base paths, as they’re 2nd in stolen bases with 66.
Oakland has played much better on the road than at home, and Glenn Otto has struggled against the A’s, giving up nine earned runs in 8.2 career innings.
The Athletics are also 14-5 in their last 19 on the road versus teams with a losing record. I like this sample size and trend, and will make it my friend for tonight’s game. I’ll take Oakland on the money line.
Prediction: Oakland Athletics Moneyline
