Texas Rangers vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis

The Philadelphia Phillies travel to Globe Life Field to take on the Texas Rangers in the first of a two game series, with right hander Kyle Gibson (4-2, 4.04 ERA) going against southpaw Martin Perez (4-2, 2.10 ERA).

The Rangers split a four game series with the Tigers in Detroit, while the Phillies won four of five from the Nationals in Washington.Texas is a -115 favorite, the Fightin’ Phils are a +105 underdog and the run total is 8.

The Rangers have a 31-35 record, good for 3rd in the AL West and 10 games behind the Astros; while the Phillies are 36-32, 3rd in the NL East and 8.5 games behind the New York Mets.

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

The offense has been the secret of the Phillies success, with a 5th best OPS of .740 and a .249 team batting average.

Pitching is in the middle of the pack with a 15th best ERA of 3.90 and a 1.27 WHIP, and their bullpen has a 20th best ERA of 4.22 and a 1.44 WHIP.

Kyle Gibson has pitched fairly well this season, in 23 starts and 71 innings he has a 4.04 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 62 Ks. The righty has good control and hasn’t given up a lot of home runs or free passes this season.

Texas Rangers Betting Preview

Martin Perez has been more than a pleasant surprise for the Texas Rangers this season. In 13 starts and 81.0 innings, he’s put up a 2.10 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and struck out 65.

He’s given up 18 walks and just two home runs, and 10 of his 13 starts have been quality starts – where he’s pitched at least 6.0 innings and given up three earned runs or less.

If he stays healthy, I think he has an outside chance to win the American League Cy Young award, and I wouldn’t be afraid to place a small wager at his current odds of +5000.

The only cause for pause is that Perez has scattered 27 hits in his last three starts and 18.0 innings. However, his advanced analytics look good and there aren’t any big weaknesses in his game.

Texas Rangers vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction

While the Phillies are a better hitting team as measured by OPS, the Rangers have enough home run power to compete. The Rangers have the edge in starting pitching and the bullpen, plus they’re playing at home. That’s why I’ll lean to the Rangers on the moneyline.

Prediction: Texas Rangers Moneyline
