Texas Rangers vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Seattle Mariners travel to Globe Life Field to take on the Texas Rangers in the first of a four game set.
The M’s swept a two game series at Washington, and the Rangers took two of three from the A’s at home where they scored a combined 22 runs, but gave up a combined 24 runs to one of the worst hitting teams in MLB. First pitch is 8:05 Eastern time in Arlington.
Seattle Scorching Lately
The best way to describe Marco Gonazles’s game is that he’s not overpowering, but very effective. In 17 starts and 94.1 innings, he’s compiled a 3.24 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP with just 49 strikeouts – that’s less than five Ks per nine innings.
With this low a strikeout number, it’s rare to see a major league pitcher have a sub-4.00 ERA. But the left-hander has been consistent in getting hitters out – and that’s the name of the game.
The Mariners are on a roll with a current 10-game winning streak. Pitching has been a big reason for the team’s success, as they’ve given up four runs or less in nine of their last 10 games.
Has Perez Already Hit His Peak?
Martin Perez had a great start to his 2022 season, but he’s had some negative regression in his last few starts.
After giving up more than three earned runs in just one of his first 14 starts, the veteran southpaw has surrendered four, three and six earned runs in his last three outings. In his last two games he’s allowed two home runs each, which brings his season-long HR total to just six – which is still pretty darn good.
It looks like Perez may be hitting the mid-season “wall,” and is ready for the All-Star Break. But I’m still impressed with his body of work through the first half of the 2022 season.
The Rangers hitting is in the middle of the pack, as they have a 16th best OPS at .700 with a .239 batting average. However, they’ve hit much better this past week as they’ve scored a combined 42 runs in their last six games.
Texas Rangers vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
After seeing their meltdowns versus the A’s earlier this week, I have a hard time trusting the Rangers bullpen – even though they still have one of the top 10 bullpen ERAs in baseball.
Perez’s recent form hasn’t been good and the Rangers are on a hitting hot streak coming into tonight’s game. The run total at 8.5 seems low, that’s why I’ll take the over total runs scored.
Prediction: Over 8.5 Total Runs Scored
