Tigers vs Athletics Analysis
The Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers play the 4th game of a rare five game series on Wednesday evening from Comerica Park.
They split a double-header yesterday with the Tigers capturing the matinee game 6-0, before Oakland bounced back in the late game with a 4-1 victory.
It will be a showdown between two rookie lefties as Zach Logue gets the nod for the A’s while Joey Wentz takes the mound for the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
Tigers Wentz Makes Big League Debut
The Detroit Tigers prevailed in the day game of yesterday’s double-header with 6-0 shutout. Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal was dominant, hurling 7 scoreless innings while allowing only three hits while striking out five.
Third baseman Jamie Candelario went 3 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI and Johnathan Schoop hit a solo homerun. Despite bringing in big name sluggers like Javy Baez and Austin Meadows the Tigers offense is just as lifeless as Oakland’s.
They rank dead last in runs scored and homeruns while ranking 29th in OPS. Rookie starter Joey Wentz takes the mound in his major league debut for the Tigers. Wentz has was drafted way back in 2017 and has jumped many hurdles to get to this point.
He was part of a major trade and overcame injuries including a Tommy John surgery. Obviously Detroit can’t expect Wentz to pitch deep into the game, but they will be able to deploy a bullpen that ranks 3rd in ERA.
A’s Lefty Zach Logue Makes 2nd Career Start
The Oakland Athletics won the nightcap of yesterday’s twin billing 4-1. Rookie righty Adrian Martinez made his major league debut, hurling 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing only four hits and striking out four. Outfielder Ramon Laureano went 2 for 4 while scoring a run.
The Athletics offense continues to be inept as they rank 27th in runs scored and dead last in OPS. Oakland southpaw Zach Logue will be making his 2nd career start after having a decent outing his 1st time out.
He allowed only two runs on five hits across five innings while striking out five. Logue was drafted back in 2017, bounced around the minors and was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays this season. The A’s bullpen ranks 9th in ERA and they will need to lean on them to eat some innings on Wednesday night.
Tigers vs Athletics Prediction
The Detroit Tigers are slightly favored with a -120 money line, while the Oakland A’s are +100 with a total set at 7.5. This game is a tough handicap because these teams are literally mirror images of each other. They are two of the worst hitting clubs in the MLB.
Both teams are turning to young left-handed starters making their first couple of career starts. Both teams also have top ten bullpens. Good luck picking a side in this barn burner. The only logical thing to do is make a very small play on the under.
Neither team can hit their way out of a wet paper bag. They also have not seen these starters before and both bullpens are fully capable of getting outs and limiting runs.
Prediction: Under 7.5 Total Runs Scored
