Tigers vs Athletics Analysis
The Oakland Athletics travel to Comerica Park in Detroit to open a rare five game series with the Tigers. The A’s lost their 9th straight game this weekend, as the Minnesota Twins became the the third straight team to complete a three game series sweep against them.
The Tigers are on a losing streak of their own, they lost their fifth straight against the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. Oakland turns to Paul Blackburn to snap the lengthy streak as Detroit hopes for the same from Michael Pineda.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST. This is a matchup between two of worst teams in the league outside of the Cincinnati Reds, both on extended losing streaks. But look at the bright side, somebody has to win and if we can find a winning play it pays the same.
A’s, Sinking Ship
The Oakland Athletics were swept this weekend in Minnesota, extending their losing streak to nine games. Two weeks ago they were a game above .500, now their record stands at 10-18 good for last place in the American League West.
Their latest loss came Sunday afternoon in a disappointing 4-3 game against the Twins. Starter Daulton Jefferies took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Sean Murphy went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.
The Oakland bats have been horrendous, they rank 29th in batting average, 29th in slugging percentage and 28th in on-base percentage.
Their pitching has at least been somewhat respectable, as they rank 19th with a 3.76 team ERA. The A’s hope starting pitcher Paul Blackburn can mercifully end this losing streak. Blackburn has been rock solid with a 3-0 record, 2.22 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.
However, he hasn’t been able to pitch deep into games, he hasn’t thrown a pitch in the 6th inning yet this season and has thrown only 24.1 innings in his five starts.
Tigers Endure Frustrating Sweep in Houston
The Detroit Tigers own the leagues 2nd longest current losing streak at five games after getting swept out of Houston by the Astros. Their current record stands at 8-19, which lands them in last place in the American League Central.
The Astros beat the Tigers by the exact same score of 3-2 in the first three games of the series. It had to demoralizing to lose three straight one run games where your pitching staff gave you a chance to win. The Tigers lost the fourth and final game of the series 5-0.
It essentially became a bullpen game for Detroit where Wily Peralta started and Drew Hutchinson took the loss. Johnathan Schoop provided the teams only hit with a double. The Tigers have scored just 78 runs this season which is second last in the league.
They rank 22nd in batting average and on-base percentage, while ranking dead last in slugging percentage.
Like the Athletics, they pitch better than they hit as they rank 12th with a 3.47 team ERA. Michael Pineda gets the opportunity to play the role of stopper on Monday night. The veteran righty is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across three starts.
Tigers vs Athletics Prediction
The Detroit Tigers are marginal favorites at -117 with the Oakland Athletics at +107 and a total of 7. These teams are close to mirror images of each other. They are both last place teams Immersed In lengthy losing streaks.
Neither team can score a run to save their lives and both have average to above average pitching. Detroit is 18-9 to the under and Oakland is 15-11-2. Combined they are cashing unders at a 60% success rate. They both also have bullpens that should be able to stifle the opposing teams anemic offenses.
The Tigers bullpen ranks 4th with a 2.74 ERA, while the A’s rank 13th with a 3.33 ERA. These teams are just ice cold at the plate. Detroit only scored 6 runs in a four game series against Houston, while Oakland scored only 4 runs in a three game series against Minnesota. Everything seems to be pointing to an under 7 in this one.
Prediction: Under 7 Total Runs Scored
