Tigers vs Yankees Analysis

The Detroit Tigers look to snap a two game skid in the second game of a three game series at Comerica Park against the New York Yankees.

The Yankees prevailed yesterday with a 4-2 victory despite Gerrit Cole not being able to make it through the second inning. Starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez will look to right the ship against Yankee right hander Luis Severino.

The third and final game of this series will take place on Thursday afternoon at 1:10pm EST. First pitch for this one is scheduled for 6:40pm EST.

Tigers Need More From E-Rod

The Detroit Tigers will be looking for a bounce back as their record fell to 4-6 after losing 4-2 to the New York Yankees last night at Comerica Park.

Tyler Alexander took the loss in what amounted to a bullpen game after he allowed two runs in only a single inning of work.

There really wasn’t a bright spot in a Tigers lineup that no extra-base hits and no multi-hit games. Leadoff man Robbie Grossman had an RBI single? So there was that.

Tonight Detroit turns to newly acquired Eduardo Rodriguez who hasn’t impressed in his first two starts. In his two starts against the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, Rodriguez has allowed 10 runs (5 earned) on nine hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in only 7.2 innings pitched.

Simply put, the Tigers need more out of him especially in the longevity department. The Detroit bats are struggling early with an average of less than three runs a game and a team batting average under .200.

Cold Cole Sore After Short Outing

The New York Yankees were lucky to salvage an ugly game on a frigid April night in Detroit against the Tigers.

Gerrit Cole lasted a career low 1.2 innings and threw a career high five walks. He only threw 46 pitches and left with a 3-2 lead. In an odd occurrence, Cole threw long toss in front of the Yankee dugout during a lengthy top of the 2nd inning.

He was clearly disappointed in post-game interviews, but said it wasn’t anything that could not be corrected. The Yankee bullpen continues to be elite, five relief arms pitched a combined 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball to secure the victory.

On the season their pen has a miniscule 1.80 ERA that ranks 2nd in the MLB. Clarke Schmidt ate the bulk of the game and was the pitcher of record after pitching 3.1 innings with six strikeouts.

Leadoff man Aaron Hicks went one for two with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Luis Severino will toe the bump for New York. He was rock solid in his last start with five shutout innings on only two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Tigers vs Yankees Prediction

The money line is set at -170 for the New York Yankees and +150 for the Detroit Tigers with a total of 7.5. We are set for another bitter cold night in Detroit with first pitch temperatures in the 40’s.

The Yankees are averaging only three runs a game and only two runs on the road while the Tigers also average less than three runs per game.

The Yankees clearly have one of the top bullpens in the league. They rank 2nd ERA while the Tigers rank 10th. Luis Severino has looked great thus far and Eduardo Rodriguez actually has a solid career track most of the big Yankee sluggers.

We cashed the under on yesterday’s article for this series. We highlighted both teams inability to string together hits and score runs. They stayed under the total last night in a game where neither starter made it through the 2nd inning. Under is the way to go in this one.

Prediction: Under 7.5 Total Runs Scored
