Toronto Blue Jays vs Boston Red Sox Analysis
The Boston Red Sox go head-to-head with the Toronto Blue Jays to kickoff a three game weekend set from the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays had a scheduled day off yesterday after losing to the New York Yankees 8-3 on Wednesday. The Red Sox took home a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles yesterday on a JD Martinez two run blast.
The crafty veteran Nick Pivetta will take the mound for Boston while Toronto counters with the young phenom Alek Manoah. First pitch is slated for 7:07 PM EST/4:07 PST.
Jays Press For Home Field Advantage
The Toronto Blue Jays record dropped to 87-69 after losing 8-3 to the New York Yankees. Tim Mayza became the answer to a trivia question as he allowed the 61st homerun to Aaron Judge to tie the Roger Maris Yankee record.
Mayza suffered his first loss of the season, making his record 8-1. Mitch White started and got knocked around for three runs on five hits across 3.2 innings of work.
Catcher Danny Jansen hit his 14th home run of the season. The Jays occupy the top Wild Card spot with a two game lead on both the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays. It’s important for them to maintain that spot for home field advantage in the first round.
Toronto turns to their 24 year-old ace Alek Manoah. Manoah has impressive 15-7 record to go along with a pristine 2.31 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. He has dominated Boston this season with only four runs allowed across 20 innings in three outings.
Red Sox Roster Needs To Be Revamped
The Boston Red Sox upped their record to 75-81 on the season after beating the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 yesterday afternoon. JD Martinez played the hero with a tie-breaking two run blast in the bottom of the 8th.
Nathan Eovaldi made his first start in two months and threw 4.2 innings of two run baseball. The Red Sox still could go .500 on the season if they run the table…Good times! Boston has a ton of work to do in the off-season, mostly with the pitching staff.
They currently rank 24th in team ERA and 25th in WHIP on the season. Nick Pivetta takes the mound on Friday night, trying to get back to .500 himself with a 10-11 record.
Pivetta has a 4.48 ERA and 1.36 WHIP to go along with 168 strikeouts across 170.1 innings of work. The Jays have gotten the better of Pivetta with 9 runs allowed across 14.2 innings pitched.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Boston Red Sox Prediction
The Toronto Blue Jays are heavily favored with a money line set at -195 while the Boston Red Sox sit at +165 with a total of 8.5. Both teams have potent lineups that have trended towards the over recently.
However Alek Manoah has had the Sox number this season with only three runs allowed across 20 innings of work. It’s enough to make me give the over a second thought. Pivetta has knocked around in his last three outings with 11 runs allowed across 15.1 innings pitched.
Both bullpens have also been in rough shape lately. I do lean towards the Jays in this one as they will be locked in, it’s nearly impossible to gage how the Red Sox motivation. However with the money line is nearly -200 and I don’t fully trust the run line at home.
I’m looking towards a Bo Bichette over 1.5 total bases prop at -105 odds here. He has 2+ total bases in 6 of his last 8 games, including his last three. Bichette is 9 for 22 against Pivetta with two homeruns and two doubles for a .409 batting average.
Prediction: Bo Bichette Over 1.5 Total Bases -105
