Toronto Blue Jays vs Detroit Tigers Analysis
The Detroit Tigers head north of the border to begin a four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday evening. The Blue Jays split two home games with the St. Louis Cardinals to open their six game home stand.
The Tigers pulled off a 2-1 series victory at home against the San Diego Padres. Yusei Kikuchi will return from the 15 day IL to start for Toronto, while the southpaw Tyler Alexander will serve as the opener for Detroit. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST/4:07 PST.
Tigers Lacking Punch At The Plate
The Detroit Tigers continue to perform horribly at the plate as they rank dead last in runs scored and second to last in OPS. They don’t hit for power and can’t manufacture runs which puts tremendous pressure on the pitching staff.
They did manage to win two of three games against the San Diego Padres, including a 4-3 victory yesterday. Tarik Skubal only yielded two unearned runs across six innings of work. Jemer Candelario went 3-4 with a double and two RBI.
Tyler Alexander opens this game with a 2-3 record of 4.05 ERA in a combination between being a starter and reliever. He will be making his 5th start of the season on Thursday evening. Alexander tossed three scoreless innings in his last outing.
Jays Look To Keep Rolling
The Toronto Blue Jays have been on a torrid offensive pace recently. Prior to getting shutdown in a 6-1 defeat against the St Louis Cardinals, the Jays had averaged 9.7 runs a game in their prior seven games.
Bo Bichette had the only extra-base hit with a double and Vladimir Guerrero Jr drove in the only Toronto. The Toronto offensive attack ranks 3rd in both OPS and runs scored.
Kevin Gausman took the loss in an ugly performance where he allowed five runs on eight hits in only 4.2 innings. The Jays hope Kikuchi can get himself on track after an IL stint. He was 3-5 with a bloated 5.12 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Detroit Tigers Prediction
The Toronto Blue Jays are heavily favored with a -215 money line, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +185 with a total of 8.5. The Jays have been hot and should be able to score plenty of runs against what amounts to a bullpen game for the Tigers.
I would love to back them on the run line, but I simply cannot trust Kikuchi. Even this hapless Detroit lineup can score runs on him and he won’t last long in his first start coming off the IL.
Surprisingly, the over is 7-1-1 in the last nine Tigers games. No surprise, the over is 5-2 in the Jays last seven games. Let’s look for scoring early and often to push us over 8.5 runs tonight.
Prediction: Over 8.5 Total Runs Scored
