Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees Analysis
The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays play the second of three games from the Rogers Centre on Wednesday evening. The Yankees officially locked up the American League East with a 5-2 win last night.
It was basically a formality as they had a double digit lead most of the way. The Jays still control their own Wild Card destiny as they control the top spot with eight games to play.
New York will send their ace Gerrit Cole to the hill while Toronto turns to the righty Mitch White. First pitch is slated for 7:07 PM EST/4:07 PST.
Yankees Lock Up AL East
The New York Yankees made it official as they clinched the American League East with a 5-2 victory over Toronto last night. Jameson Taillon was spot on while picking up his 14th win and holding the Jays to two runs across 7.1 innings of work.
Lou Trivino picked up his 11th save as he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to close the game. Second baseman Gleyber Torres went 3 for 5 with three RBI. Aaron Judge came looking for #61 but the Jays weren’t having it as they walked him four times.
Clinching the AL East was a formality for the Bronx Bombers as they held a double digit lead for much of the year. Tonight the Yanks send their ace Gerrit Cole to the mound. Cole is 12-7 on the year with a 3.49 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
He has struck out 244 batters in only 188.1 but has also allowed 31 homeruns. Cole had faced the Jays twice this season and given up 7 earned runs in only 11.2 innings pitched.
Jays Work To Clinch Wildcard
The Toronto Blue Jays were determined to defend their home field and keep the Yankees from clinching the division. They fell short last night in a 5-2 loss at Rogers Centre. Jose Berrios got smashed for five runs on nine hits across 5.1 innings.
Leadoff man George Springer went 2 for 4 while hitting his 24th homerun of the season. He was the only Blue Jay with an extra or multi-hit game. Now the Jays focus on the Wild Card were they occupy the top spot with a three game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Jays offense has mashed all season long as they rank 4th in team OPS. Toronto reluctantly turns to the struggling righty Mitch White. White is 1-6 on the season with a 5.12 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.
He was solid in four innings against the Yankees in August as he held them to one run. However he has been in horrible form with a 8.03 ERA across 12.1 September innings.
Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees Prediction
The New York Yankees are slightly favored on the road with a money line set at -125 while the Toronto Blue Jays sit at +105 with a total of 7.5. We get another 7.5 total due to the fact that Cole is the mound but he has been off lately.
Cole has allowed four runs in each of his last three outings and four runs last time he faced the Jays. Both lineups came into this series hot as New York had an .882 team OPS in their last 12 games while Toronto had a .763 OPS in their last 15.
The over is 7-2 in the Yankees last nine games and 8-2 in Jays last 10 games. White has been in horrendous form and doesn’t last much past four innings even when he is on.
He is backed by a Jays pen that ranks 23rd in ERA in September while the Yanks pen is still dealing with injuries. This number is way to low in this one.
Prediction: Over 7.5 -115
