Twins vs Astros Analysis

The Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins begin a three game series at Target Field on Tuesday night after both teams had a scheduled off day on Monday.

The Twins completed a three game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Astros are on a 7 game win streak after wrapping up a four game sweep over the Detroit Tigers with a 5-0 shutout.

The 39 year-old Justin Verlander gets the nod for Houston, while the 25 year-old Joe Ryan takes the mound for Minnesota. First pitch is slated for 7:40 PM EST as both teams put their winning streaks on the line.

Houston Has No Problems

The Houston Astros are on amazing 7 game winning streak, upping their record to 18-11 on the season, landing them in 2nd place in the American League West. They beat the Detroit Tigers 5-0 on Sunday after beating them three times in a row by the exact same score of 3-2.

Aledmys Diaz led the offensive attack, going 2 for 3 with a grand slam. Jake Odorizzi threw five scoreless innings while only allowing two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The Astros have also relied heavily on their pitching staff. They rank 3rd in ERA and WHIP at 2.95 and 1.10 respectively, while ranking 6th with an opponent batting average of .216. Their offense has been lackluster as they rank 27th with a .217 batting average and 19th in runs scored.

Justin Verlander has been dominant in his five starts so far this season. The veteran righty is 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 0.70 WHIP with 31 strikeouts across 32.2 innings of work.

Twins Coming Off A’s Sweep

The Minnesota Twins improved to 18-11 on the season after completing a three game sweep over the Oakland Athletics this weekend. They finished off the A’s with a close 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Starter Chris Paddack gave up all three runs on five hits in only 2.1 innings pitched. The bullpen came through in a major way for the Twins as five relievers combined for 6.2 scoreless innings. Cody Stashak got the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season after pitching 2.2 innings of shutout baseball.

Jorge Polanco went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and a walk. The Twins are in first place in the American League Central mostly due to their dominant pitching. The Twins rank 4th in ERA at 3.11 and 5th in WHIP at 1.12 while holding opposing hitters to only a .220 batting average, good for 9th in the MLB. Minnesota has also been above average at the plate, ranking 10th in batting average and 11th in both slugging and on-base percentage.

Starter Joe Ryan has been lights out thus far for Minnesota and he will toe the rubber for them on Tuesday night. Ryan is 3-1 on the season with a minuscule 1.63 ERA and 0.83 WHIP across 27.2 innings of work. However his last start was his worst of the season as gave up two earned runs in only 4.2 innings pitched.

Twins vs Astros Prediction

The Houston Astros are road favorites with a -145 money line, while the Twins are +125 with a total of 6.5. The strength of both of these clubs is on the mound.

The total has went under in six of the last nine head-to-head meetings between these teams. The total has also finished under in 26 of the Astros last 36 games. Justin Verlander has been dominant against current Minnesota hitters.

They have only hit .158 with a .627 OPS in 63 at bats against him. The Twins offense could be very short-handed as they will be without starting second baseman Luis Arraez, while former Astro Carlos Correa is doubtful and leadoff man Byron Buxton is questionable.

Those are three of the top hitters in Minnesota’s lineup, making scoring runs even more difficult. Everything about this game points to the under, especially early in the game. It’s sounds like a low number but I don’t see anything I’m more confident in then under 3 in the first five innings and we get it at plus money.

Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under 3 +105
