Twins vs Tigers Analysis
The Detroit Tigers begin a three game series with the Minnesota Twins from the Target Center on Monday night. The Twins are coming off a late come from behind victory in Kansas City as they completed a three game sweep of the Royals.
The Tigers also won as they split what became a two game series with the Cleveland Guardians. These teams met for a three game series back in April with the Twins sweeping the Tigers at home, while outscoring them 17-5.
Elvin Rodriguez is set to make his first career start for Detroit, while the veteran Chris Archer gets the nod for Minnesota. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST/4:40 PST.
Toothless Tigers
The Detroit Tigers made some major offseason acquisitions and hoped to be a dark horse team in the American League Central this season. It hasn’t worked out that way as they occupy last place with a 14-26 record.
They will take whatever positives they can find and Sundays 4-2 victory over Cleveland had a few shining through. Rookie starter Alex Faedo got his first victory while hurling 5.1 innings and allowing only two runs on six hits.
Newly acquired slugger Javy Baez hit a solo homerun, however it was only his 3rd of the season with a pathetic. 207 batting average. This Tiger offense is horribly across the board, ranking dead last in runs with only 2.85 per game.
They also rank dead last in homeruns, 29th in batting average and 27th in OPS. The pitching has tread water with a 3.67 ERA they rank 12th in the league.
Elvin (not Eduardo) Rodriguez will be making his first career start and second career appearance on Monday night. On April 10th he got roughed up by the White Sox, allowing four earned runs in only 2.2 innings of work.
Twins Killing It
The Minnesota Twins enter this game winners of four straight and 6 of their last 7 games. The Twins currently sit at first place in the American League Central with a 25-16 record. Minnesota will be riding high after overcoming a 6 run deficit in the last two innings to pull out a narrow 7-6 win in yesterday’s finale against the Royals.
Starter Bailey Ober kept his team in the game with five innings of one run baseball but reliever Yennier Cano let him down with five runs allowed in only a third of an inning.
The top of the order carried the offense, including leadoff man Luis Arraez going 3 for 5 with a run scored. Head coach Rocco Baldelli has done an amazing job with the Twins. They have overcome injuries up and down the roster and managed to have an above average offense with 4.28 runs a game to go along with a .713 OPS.
Minnesota has also been outstanding on the mound as thry rank 4th with a 3.33 ERA. Journeyman Chris Archer will make his eighth start of the season, he enters the game with an 0-1 record and 4.10 ERA. He has really struggled with length this season, pitching into the 5th inning only once this season.
Twins vs Tigers Prediction
The Minnesota Twins are heavily favored with a -190 money line, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +160 with a total of 8.5.
These teams are are clearly opposite directions as reflected with the huge line. However, neither team is sending a particular trustworthy starting pitcher to the mound. The Twins are on fire and are clearly superior offensively.
They rank 6th with a 112 wRC+ compared to the Tigers who rank dead last with a 77. I just can’t trust Archer enough to take the Twins on the run line. Let’s fade the rookie starter and back the Twins bats with a Minnesota over 4.5 team total.
