Shane McClanahan
It is hard to find a pitcher, in either league, that is pitching better than Shane McClanahan is pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays this season, a huge reason that he is currently the American League favorite at (+205).
Regardless of the league, McClanahan is the only pitcher that ranks in the top 20 in every major statistically category. He has secured double digit wins already this season, and those 10 wins put him in 4th place in the MLB.
McClanahan has posted the best ERA in the MLB at 1.71, alongside the best WHIP in the MLB at 0.80. He has sat down 147 batters on strikes already, the 2nd most in the league, which has resulted in a 12.0 K/9 (also 2nd best in the league).
He has has produced 14 quality starts (4th most in the league), nearly 78% of his starts, and all of these impressive stats while 13 pitchers have thrown more innings this season than McClanahan, as he ranks 14th with 110.2 IP. McClanahan has surely done his part to help keep the Rays in the hunt for October.
They are currently 10 games above .500, with a 51-41 record, which is good enough for 2nd place in the best division in baseball, but they still find themselves 13 games behind the 1st place Yankees. On the bright side, Tampa Bay leads the way in the wildcard hunt currently in the American League.
Justin Verlander
Year after year after year we find Justin Verlander’s name on this list, not to take anything away from Verlander because year after year after year he deserves to find himself on this list.
It is hard to question the consistency of a player like this, especially when he leads the MLB with 12 wins coming into the All-Star Break and he possesses the 3rd best ERA in the league (1.89).
Verlander may only be striking out 8.9 batters per 9 innings, but he still ranks 15th in Ks (108) on the season and he has prevented baserunners with the 3rd best WHIP in the league at 0.88.
He has thrown the 17th most innings in the league, tossing 109.1 IP, but he has been efficient, posting 13 quality starts (76% of starts) and helping lift Houston to the 2nd best record in the American League.
He is also arguably the most valuable pitcher for his team in the American League, as the Astros have won over 76% of his starts this year, the highest percentage of the 7 pitchers on this list. The Houston Astros have posted a 13-4 in his 17 starts this season.
Shohei Ohtani
Ohtani may lead the way in the odds for the American League MVP, but his stat line is arguably better on the mound than it is in the batters box. Shohei Ohtani has made the fewest starts out of any of the pitchers on this list.
The team is just 9-6 in his 15 starts on the year and he has walked away with a win in all 9 of those games, tying him with Cole and Cease for the 11th most wins in the majors thus far.
He has thrown just 87 innings on the year, which doesn’t qualify him for the season stat rankings, but hypothetically, Ohtani would rank 8th in ERA as he has posted an impressive 2.38, and he would rank 12th with a WHIP of 0.99!
Regardless of the amount of innings Ohtani has pitched, he ranks 8th in the league with 123 strikeouts, even though 74 pitchers have thrown more innings than he has this year!
That strikeout total would rank him 2nd in K/9 with 12.7 batters sat down per 9 innings pitched, even though he doesn’t qualify in that stat either. The offense has obviously struggled for this team as the 9-6 record doesn’t reflect the performance of Ohtani as a pitcher this season.
Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole finds himself as the ace of the best team in baseball currently and ranking in the top 20 in nearly every category. Cole ranks 11th in the league with 9 wins on the season, but the Yankees are 14-5 in his 19 mound appearances this season.
He has posted a 3.02 ERA on the season, while that is 24th in the MLB this season, he has been one of the most efficient strikeout pitchers all season. Cole ranks 3rd in K/9, striking out 11.7 batters per 9 innings, resulting in 147 Ks on the season, tied for 2nd with Shane McClanahan.
Cole has kept his WHIP below 1.00, at 0.98 he ranks just outside the top 10, coming in 11th in the league. He has thrown 113.1 IP this season, the 10th most in the league, and he has tallied 13 quality starts (9th in the MLB), throwing a quality appearance in nearly 70% of his starts.
When it comes to team accolades, New York finds themselves at the front of most lists, as they have posted the best record in the league. Even more impressively, they are 13 games ahead of Tampa Bay who finds themselves in 2nd place in what I have referred to before as the best division in baseball currently.
Dylan Cease
The Chicago White Sox were a team that people thought were going to run away with their division, and now at 46-46 at the All-Star Break, the White Sox find themselves in 3rd place in the AL Central.
They are 3 games back of Minnesota, while sitting 3.5 games behind Toronto for the 3rd wildcard spot. He has put up the 11th most wins in the league, winning 9 games, but the team has racked up 14 wins in his 19 starts.
He leads the league in strikeouts, sitting down 150 batters on Ks, racking up nearly 13 Ks per 9 innings pitched, the best K/9 rating in the league. Cease has also posted the 6th best ERA in the MLB at 2.15, and while he has only tallied 7 quality starts, nobody on the list has started in more games that their team won than Dylan Cease.
His White Sox look to turn things around in the 2nd half of the season, and if Cease can continue his persistent while Chicago improves, he could make a serious push for this Cy Young award.
Kevin Gausman
Kyle Gausman finds himself in the 6th spot at (+1700) and while he only has received 6 wins by decision this season, he has posted an ERA of just 2.87, 18th best in the MLB! He has racked up 106 strikeouts, which has helped him skyrocket his K/9 ratio up to 10.1, the 8th best in the majors this season.
The team may be just 8-9 in his 17 starts this year, but racking up that amount of strikeouts in just 94 IP this season, with a 1.29 WHIP is impressive for any pitcher. Especially one that finds himself in difficult divisional situations.
