Draft Kings

Paul Goldschmidt

While the American League is seemingly more definitive when it comes to what teams will represent them late in the postseason, the National League is seemingly more definitive when it comes to individual awards.

There are two players sitting well atop the American League MVP odds, but Freddie Freeman stands alone atop the National League. Paul Goldschmidt is the only player in the top 7 players in the National League MVP chase that is ranked in the top 20 in batting average, OPS, HRs, RBIs and runs scored.

Yordan Alvarez is also currently accomplishing this feat, but Goldschmidt has done it on another level, as he ranks in the top 5 in the league in 4 of those 5 categories.

He has the 2nd best batting average in the MLB, hitting .330, to go alongside the 2nd best OPS in the league at 1.004. Goldschmidt has blasted 20 HRs (14th in the MLB), which has elevated his runs scored, crossing the play 64 times (2nd most in the MLB) and driving in 70 RBIs on the season (3rd most in the MLB).

Not only has he put mind-boggling numbers, but he has also contributed immensely to his Cardinals team this season. Out of the 7 players on this list, Goldschmidt is responsible for the highest percentage of his teams runs, playing a part in 26.5% of St. Louis’s runs this year.

He is responsible for 114 runs on the year, the most among the top 7 players in the AL or NL MVP hunt. Goldschmidt has helped propel this Cardinals team into 2nd place in the NL Central, just 0.5 games behind Milwaukee and currently holding the 3rd wild card spot.

Manny Machado

Manny Machado has always been a top tier player, so it should come as no surprise that he finds himself in discussion again for the MVP crown, but the play that San Diego has strung together this season has been impressive and maybe even a little shocking.

Especially when you factor in the injury to their youngest star that has kept Tatis out of the lineup all season. Manny Machado has, without question, softened the blow that is the extended absence of Fernando Tatis.

San Diego is 52-42 on the season, and while they are 10 games back of the Dodgers, they currently hold the 2nd wildcard spot, 2 games up on Philadelphia. Offensively, Machado is hitting over .300 (16th in the MLB ; .303) with some definitive power behind the bat, posting an OPS of .890 (12th in the MLB).

He has scored 56 runs on the season, and is responsible for over 90 runs for the Padres on the year. Machado has an uphill battle ahead of him, any other season and Machado would have a better shot at the title, but if he can continue his dominance, there is still plenty of time to close the gap.

Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso couldn’t close out his 3rd consecutive HR Derby crown, but I think he may be willing to trade that title for an MVP title this season. This season has already created a storyline to remember for New York Mets fans, but the season isn’t over yet.

The New York Mets are currently in 1st place in the NL East and they hold the 2nd best record in the National League at 58-35. Pete Alonso has continued to show his brute strength and power, the same talents that have won him those HR derby titles, but he has shown that he possess that power even outside the All-Star Break.

Alonso has blasted 24 HRs this season, the 5th most in the MLB, helping him post the most RBIs in the league at the break. He has driven in 78 runs this season, and has scored 50 runs himself, making him responsible for 23.8% of New York’s runs this season, the 2nd most on this list in the National League.

Alonso has hit for just .265 this season, but his .857 OPS ranks him 20th in the league. Alonso may not be the only superstar on this roster, but he is one of the essential pieces that has lifted this Mets team into 1st place.

Mookie Betts

Mookie Betts currently leads the odds out of his teammates, ranking 4th in the National League MVP odds at (+1100).

Betts has hit .265 on the season thus far, ranking 60th in the league, but that hasn’t stopped him from blasting 20 HRs on the year (14th in the league).

While the deep ball has helped him cross the plate, that hasn’t been the only way that Betts has been able to score.

He is currently 4th in the MLB in runs scored, crossing the plate 63 times on the season. If you ask Betts, credit for a percentage of those runs scored can go to the next two guys on the list.

Austin Riley

Austin Riley is actually 5th in the odds when it comes to the National League MVP, coming in at (+1400). Yet, Austin Riley has one of the most impressive stat lines out of the 7 players on the list in the National League.

I have focused a lot of the statistical aspect on batting average, OPS, HRs, RBIs and runs scored, and Austin Riley is one of just 3 players out of the 7 in the National League that rank in the top 10 in at least 3 of those categories, along with the leader, Paul Goldschmidt (who is currently top 10 in 4 categories) and Freddie Freeman.

Riley has posted an OPS of .922 (8th in the league), and he has obliterated 27 HRs this year (3rd in the league), both resulting in 61 RBIs (9th in the MLB). Riley is still hitting an impressive .285 and ranks 17th in runs scored, crossing the plate himself 55 times this year.

His play, along with the likes of Ronald Acuna, have prompted Atlanta to enter the All-Star Break with a record of 56-38, 2nd in the NL East but just 2.5 games back of the Mets. Regardless, that record has put them 6 games ahead in the wild card chase, currently occupying the top wild card spot in the National League.

Freddie Freeman

Freddie Freeman is 6th in the National League odds for the MVP at (+1400), showing that while Goldschmidt leads the way in the National League, the top 7 players are separated by a noticeably smaller margin than the National League.

That could be because the talent is distributed more in the National League, as we see the player with the 6th best odds possess the 4th best batting average in the league (.321), to go alongside the 7th best OPS (.926) and 7th most runs scored (60).

That is exactly where Freddie Freeman has found himself, he is responsible for nearly 23% of the Dodgers runs scored this season, thanks to his 59 RBIs (13th in the MLB).
