Yankees vs Red Sox Analysis
Better late than never! The Yankees and Red Sox were supposed to kick things off on Thursday, but rain pushed Opening Day back to Friday. Boston edged out New York 10-8 in their regular season meetings last year, but the Yankees won six out of their ten games in the Bronx in 2021.
New Story For Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox will begin another season with high expectations. They challenged the Houston Astros for the American League Championship last season and hope to build on that success.
During the offseason the Sox lost Kyle Schwarber, Hunter Renfroe and Eduardo Rodriguez to free agency. However, the addition of Trevor Story will help fill the gap left by the two hitters mentioned.
Story put up 30 home run 30 double seasons in 2018 and 2019, and there is no reason to think he can’t do it again with a swing built for Fenway Park.
The Red Sox announced that their best starting pitcher, Chris Sale, will be placed on the 60-day injured list with a rib stress fracture.
Nathan Eovaldi will start for Boston, last season he went 11-9 with a 3.75 ERA and 195 strikeouts across 182 innings pitched. He’s posted similar numbers in the spring training with a 3.55 ERA and 16 strikeouts on 12.2 innings pitched.
Yankees Lineup Loaded With Power
The New York Yankees enter this season with hopes for their first World Series Championship since 2009. Getting knocked out last season in a one-game elimination against their rival was a hard loss for Yankees fans to take.
The Yankee lineup was already intimidating with sluggers like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo. The addition of a professional hitter like Josh Donaldson will only make for a stronger lineup. This offense will score plenty but they will also strikeout a ton.
Gerrit Cole will take the mound for New York on Thursday afternoon. Last season he went 16-8 with a 3.23 ERA and 243 strikeouts in 181.1 innings pitched. During the spring he has 6.75 ERA in only 5.1 innings pitched but he does have 10 strikeouts.
Yankees vs Red Sox Prediction
Both teams are pitching top line starters and both have a top ten rated bullpen coming into this season. They also both have stacked lineups, it feels like the over/under is an absolute coin flip.
To be honest, the side almost does as well. Eovaldi always seems to step up in big games and he will most likely pitch deeper into the game than Cole. With a game that feels like a coin flip between two teams that know each other extremely well, how can you not be tempted to grab a +145 / +150 price on the Red Sox?
