Headlining a PPV event is one thing but having the opportunity to headline international fight week on the most stacked card of the year is a massive opportunity for both men to cement their legacy inside the octagon.
Israel Adesanya has cleared out the middleweight division of all challengers since arriving at the UFC in 2018. Coming off a brilliant victory over his toughest competition at middleweight Robert Whittaker he brings tremendous momentum into this matchup. With Cannonier, arguably his most explosive opponent to date.
Jared Cannonier brings the experience of being a former Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight contender in the UFC before establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with at 185 pounds. Since moving to 185 pounds, there’s no doubt Cannonier has brought his heavyweight power with him, earning four victories via KO/TKO.
Killa Gorilla
Jared Cannonier comes into this fight having defeated back-to-back top 10 contenders while winning 5 of 6 at middleweight overall since joining the weight class.
Jared brings a unique energy and ferociousness to the octagon, making him a dangerous opponent for any style you bring at him. The most impressive part of Cannonier’s resurgence at 185 is his mindset that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to raise his hand.
As we saw in his most recent bout against Derek Brunson, he doesn’t quit when put in challenging positions. Jared knows his path to victory in this fight is KO or bust. I expect him to be in the face of Israel Adesanya for the duration of the war, looking to back him down and land bombs.
The Last Stylebender
Israel Adesanya has been perfect at middleweight since joining the UFC in 2018 as he’s all 11 of his fights, including six middleweight championship bouts.
Adesanya has overmatched everyone he’s faced on the feet in the UFC, with his comprehensive kickboxing experience paying massive dividends. The only time we’ve seen him struggle was facing Jan Blachowicz up a weight class as he attempted to become a two-division champion.
Adesanya is rapidly approaching Anderson Silva’s middleweight record of 11 title victories, which is undoubtedly on the champion’s mind as he can inch closer this Saturday.
The key for Adesanya in this matchup will be to manage the distance and use the octagon size to his advantage, as Cannonier will be looking to get in the pocket and trade.
Israel Adesanya vs Jared Cannonier Prediction
Styles make fights, and both men are aware of their paths to victory. I expect Cannonier to bring the fight to Adesanya while hunting a finish, which can also leave him liable to massive shots from the most talented striker we’ve ever seen in the octagon. Under 4.5 Rounds (+100).
Prediction: Under 4.5 Rounds (+100)
