Calvin Kattar vs Josh Emmett Analysis
Calvin Kattar makes his long-awaited return after crushing Giga Chikadze in January. Kattar landed 144 significant strikes while winning all five rounds on the scorecards and pulling off the upset as a +200 underdog.
Josh Emmett has been on a roll of late as he looks to find a win that gives him enough momentum to earn a title shot at the age of 37. This fight will mark the fourth time in five fights that Emmett is an underdog, and He’s 3-0 in that spot thus far.
This fight will be the 11th walk to the octagon for both men. They each look to break through and earn a title shot in a division lacking challengers to the throne of Alexander Volkanovski.
‘Fighting Falmer’
Josh Emmett is a perennial underdog who’s faced challenge after challenge inside the octagon, but he continues to show he’s an elite featherweight. Emmett will be looking to redeem himself after falling short in his previous main event opportunity against Jeremy Stephens. He’ll need his biggest upset to date this Saturday.
Josh Emmett comes into this fight on a four-fight win streak, including wins over Dan Ige and Shane Burgos. He’s proven himself to be one of the most powerful punchers in the division, earning a staggering 11 knockdowns over his past seven fights. He believes in the “take one to give one” strategy throughout his career and has shown the ability n to hand out the more powerful punches.
Emmett’s wrestling may be the X-Factor in this matchup as he’s landed takedowns at a 47% clip over his UFC tenure, especially with the toughness and output of Kattar posing a problematic situation throughout five rounds.
‘Boston Finisher’
Calvin Kattar came to the UFC in 2017 and quickly put himself on the map earning victories over Andre Fili and Shane Burgos. He then found himself in the deep end of the UFC, fighting top-10 contender after top-10 contender and had his setbacks. Still, he has made a name for himself as one of the most challenging and fan-friendly fighters on the roster who can turn his opponents’ lights out at any moment.
Calvin Kattar has proven himself to be a problem at featherweight over his tenure, in which he’s shown tremendous toughness and skill, but most importantly, he’s shown growth fight after fight.
After falling massively short and taking an all-time beatdown against Max Holloway, he returned by putting on a masterful performance against Giga Chikadze. Now he’ll look to build off that performance and take out proven top-10 featherweight Josh Emmett. To do so, he’ll need to be sharp and aware of the extreme power he offers.
Calvin Kattar vs Josh Emmett Prediction
Both men have shown tremendous durability over their respective careers. With high stakes, I expect a chess match, which is why I am looking to back the over 4.5 rounds at -130.
