2024 Daytona 500 Storylines
Aside from the rain, there’s certainly been a little more buzz around this year’s Daytona 500, presumably because of the recent Netflix mini-series which gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at last year’s playoff chase. Three-time Daytona 500 champion (but never a NASCAR series champion) Denny Hamlin was a focal point of that series as he navigates being a full-time driver along with being a team owner.
Thanks to changes in the car and NASCAR’s speedway package, betting on the Daytona 500 has become a total crapshoot. Undoubtedly, there are some drivers (like Hamlin) that are better on speedway conditions than others, but Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta have become last-man-standing competitions in recent years because of all the crashes and cautions.
Since 2010, winners of the Daytona 500 include: Jamie McMurray, Trevor Bayne, Austin Dillon, Michael McDowell, Austin Cindric and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – Not exactly a list of household names.
So if you’re looking to enjoy some wagering activity on the 2024 Daytona 500 on Monday afternoon, do it for entertainment purposes and bet responsibly. There will be plenty of upcoming opportunities through out the season to try and find a betting edge. Daytona isn’t one of those place.
2024 Daytona 500 Betting Predictions
With all of those disclaimers out of the way, y’all still want a prediction, right?
Winner: Martin Truex Jr. (+2000 at most books)
The Daytona 500 has a funny way of producing storybook finishes, and this would certainly be one of them. Following Kevin Harvick’s retirement at the end of last season, Truex Jr. is now the oldest full-time driver on the circuit and he’s never won the Daytona 500. In 2016, he was involved in the closest finish in Daytona 500 history when he lost by inches to Denny Hamlin. The retirement rumors have been swirling around Truex Jr. over the last year, and he would certainly love a shot at putting this cherry on top of his career.
Here’s the scoop: Aside from Hamlin, Toyotas traditionally have not run well at NASCAR’s super-speedways. Toyota came into this year saying that their cars might not look great in single-car qualifying, but they would be much more competitive in racing conditions. That’s exactly what happened as Toyotas were dreadful in qualifying but performed great in Thursday’s duels, with Tyler Reddick winning the first and Christopher Bell winning the second.
This will be the fifth race at Daytona since NASCAR moved to the NextGen car two years ago. Truex Jr. has won three of the eight previous stages at Daytona, and he’s been top-10 in seven of those eight. What does that mean? He’s lived in the front of the pack in these races, but hasn’t gotten the late-race luck to go his way.
Top-10: Riley Herbst (+350)
The 2022 Daytona 500 made betting headlines because a handful of very lucky bettors cashed some monster parlay tickets on drivers that would normally never sniff the front of a traditional NASCAR race. Thanks to crashes and cautions, some of the longest shots on the board all finished in the top-10 and created some major liability for the sports books. Unfortunately, they learned their lesson and those days are over.
Herbst is a longshot for a reason, but he knows how to get around a speedway. Just 24-years-old, Herbst has enjoyed success at both Daytona and Talladega. While racing part-time at the NASCAR Cup level last season, Herbst finished tenth in the Daytona 500 and ninth at Talladega last season. In his three seasons with Stewart–Haas Racing at the Xfinity level, Herbs finished 4th, 4th, 6th, 7th and 10th at Daytona and Talladega. If you want to include Atlanta in that mix as a modified super-speedway, Herbst has finished 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th there, too.
