2022 NBA Draft

The No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren went down with an injury to his right foot around a month ago and will unfortunately miss the entire 2022-23 season for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

All eyes will be on No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero as he looks to make his mark on the Orlando Magic. Other rookies who should be in opening night starting lineups including Jabari Smith Jr. (Rockets), Jaden Ivey (Pistons) and Keegan Murray (Kings).

It’s more than likely that one of these four rookies will end up winning Rookie of the Year at the end of the regular season. Other rookies who should see adequate playing time on their respective teams include Jalen Williams (Thunder), Shaedon Sharpe (Blazers) and Tari Eason (Rockets).

NBA Offseason Moves

Let’s start in Utah where the Jazz unloaded Rudy Gobert to the Timberwolves, which gives Minnesota an All-Star pairing with Karl-Anthony Towns.

The Jazz also traded away Donovan Mitchell to the Cavaliers. They put the cherry on top to let everyone know they’re in a rebuilding state by also sending Bogan Bogdonovic to the Pistons as well.

The Hawks made their mark going all-in this season by trading for former Spurs guard Dejounte Murray in an attempt to create a one-two combo punch at the guard position with Trae Young.

Significant moves involving role players include Christian Wood’s trade from the Rockets to the Mavericks. Malcolm Brogdon is now on the Celtics, Otto Porter Jr. was sent to the Raptors and John Wall has joined the Clippers after he was bought out of his deal with the Rockets.

The Lakers also got into the mix by trading for veteran guard Patrick Beverly and signing Dennis Schroder.

A couple players who won’t switch teams this season are Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant with heavy speculation that both were unhappy in Brooklyn and wanted out. Both came to their senses and decided that they had the best shot to go after an NBA Championship in their current setting in Brooklyn.

NBA Coaching Moves

There were five teams who made head coaching moves heading into the 2022-23 season, starting with the Hornets hiring Steve Clifford in what should be familiar territory for him as he coached the team from 2013-2018.

The Lakers fired Frank Vogel and chose to replace him with first-time NBA head coach Darvin Ham, who previously served as an assistant with the team from 2011-2013 and also served as an assistant on the Hawks and Bucks coaching staffs in the past.

The Kings hired veteran head coach Mike Brown, replacing Alvin Gentry. The Jazz decided to part ways with Quin Snyder after last season. He’ll be replaced by another first-time head coach in Will Hardy, who served as an assistant on the Spurs and Celtics coaching staffs in the past.

The fifth head coaching move for this season was done as a result of some off-court misconduct by Celtics head coach Ime Udoka. The team decided to suspend Udoka for the entire 2022-23 season as a result of that misconduct and assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will take over as interim head coach for this season.

NBA Championship Odds

At the time of posting, the Los Angeles Clippers are the +550 favorites to win the 2022-23 NBA Championship at DraftKings Sports Book. The Clippers will be getting Kawahi Leonard back after missing all of last season, and Paul George should be at full strength as well after playing sparingly last season.

Last year’s NBA finalists, the Warriors and Celtics, are each +600 behind the Clippers. Golden State is expected to return the same starting lineup from last year’s championship run, but the Celtics have seen quite a bit of turnover in their organization over the last month.

Miami was the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season, but barely crack the top-10 on this year’s odds board. The Heat will be an interesting team to watch in the futures market, considering they return almost everyone from last year’s run.
