NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award Betting Trends

The NBA Defensive Player of the Year award is determined by 124 various writers and broadcasters who each vote for their top three players.

Being a defensive award, it is based on blocks, steals and defensive rebounds per game. The teams with the most past winners are the Detroit Pistons (6), Utah Jazz (5) and San Antonio Spurs (4) and 12 teams have never won the award.

There are two players tied for most DPOY awards at four, Dikembe Mutombo (1995, 1997,1998, 2001) and Ben Wallace (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006). A total of 10 players have won the award twice.

2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Prediction 1: Evan Mobley, CLE (+600 DraftKings)

Considering every option has a great potential payout with the floor being +600 we will make two equal plays and if one winner, we profit.

Jaren Jackson was last season’s winner, and he blocks a ton of shots but has fallen short of playing 65 games in all but one of his seasons due to injury.

You need to play 65 games to be eligible for the DPOY award and that gives Evan Mobley the edge between the favorites. Mobley was a finalist for the award last season with an average of 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 0.8 steals per game.

He led the NBA in defensive win shares last season and is consistent with his blocks with averages of 1.5 & 1.7 the last two seasons. Considering how close he was to winning the award last season, he will only need a slight improvement to take home the trophy this season.

2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Prediction 2: Brook Lopez, MIL (+1400 DraftKings)

We will look towards a bit of longshot for our second play with Brook Lopez at +1400 odds. Lopez was a finalist to win the award last season with 6.7 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 0.5 steals per game.

His rebounds would likely need to increase but his overall numbers give him a leg up on players like Bam Adebayo who relies more on being an outstanding on-ball defender.

The addition of Dame Lillard’s scoring may also free up Lopez to focus more on his defense. Lopez has also been played 65+ games in 11 of his last 13 seasons, so durability isn’t an issue. Take a shot on Lopez at +1400 odds.
