Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat Analysis

The Miami Heat can go 4-2 on their six game road trip if they win in Atlanta tonight, and the Hawks will be playing only their second home game since Christmas, and maybe they might want to extend the road trip as they have lost eight in a row at home. Despite the dismal home record, they still open up as a -2.5 favorite with a total over 223, so let’s see what these two teams can offer us in terms of value on a wager tonight.

Not The Hawks From Last Year

The Hawks looked like a team on the rise last season, but that ship has sailed as the 17-22 Hawks have massive problems, and it is mostly on the defensive end. They have the 4th worst defensive rating as a team, and they are bottom 10 in defending four out of the five positions. Trae Young continues to add nothing on defense, and Capela has taken a major step back for last season’s production. The home/road splits are completely confusing as they started the season 8-1 at home, but have now gone eight games at home without a win. They’re overall home record this year is 8-9, but to have those two streaks are very strange. The Books have done a solid job nailing their Total number as the Hawks are 5-5 over/under in their last five as most would expect Atlanta to be a big over team. Capeal and Reddish are probably out tonight, which is a bad sign as those two didn’t play last game and they had a horrible loss to the Clippers who were playing their second game in 20 hours.

The Heat Heating Up

The Heat and Erik Spoelstra have done a fantastic job navigating the injuries to Adebayo and Butler, in fact they’re 9-3 their last 12 and they won the last two games without Jimmy Butler while scoring 115 and 123 in those two games. They’ve done this by becoming a great three point shooting team this season as they are third in three point shooting percentage and top 6 in frequency, three pointers attempted and three pointers made. The last two games with Butler out, Robinson and Strus have been the shooting catalysts and that bodes well for them as the Hawks are a bottom five team defending three point shots.

Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat Prediction

Atlanta’s struggles at home can’t be ignored as they are 1-9 against the spread at home their last 10 and Miami is 4-1 against the spread on the road their last five with two wins in a row without Butler. I guess the road trip for Miami is why they are the underdog, but I won’t be betting against them anytime soon. In fact, tonight I’ll be betting on them to win straight up as an underdog in Atlanta.

Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat Preview from GoldSheet

Atlanta looked pretty good after beating Indiana on Dec. 1, sporting a 12-10 mark on the season at that point after having won 8 of its last 9. The next 5 weeks haven’t been as kind to Head Coach Nate McMillan’s Hawks, as they stand just 5-12 straight up and against the number since. Now they must to face Miami (three times), the Knicks, Bucks, and the suddenly healthy and hot Timberwolves in the next 9 days. The Heat have won seven of its last nine, ranking 4th in net rating differential in that period despite the fact only Tyler Herro and Omer Yurtseven played in all nine of those (Jimmy Butler missed four games, Kyle Lowry two, Duncan Robinson three, Gabe Vincent five). Atlanta has played the Heat tough in the last two years, winning and covering 3 of the last 4 meetings, and Miami is out of this one nursing his ankle problem, but Caleb Martin, Hero, Robinson and Max Strus give Head Coach Eric Spoelstra a deep set of choices and Hawk C Clint Capela is doubtful with an ankle injury.
Play Miami.
