Dallas Mavericks vs Phoenix Suns Analysis

The Phoenix Suns travel to America Airlines Arena for a Western Conference clash with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. The Suns are on a blistering pace at 34-9, leading the Western Conference by 2.5 games. The Dallas Mavericks will be playing the second game of a back-to-back after out lasting the Toronto Raptors 102-98 to improve to 26-19 on the season. This will be the third and final regular season meeting between these squads. The Suns won the first two games at home by the score of 105-98 and 112-104.

Suns Look To Complete Perfect Road Trip

The Phoenix Suns will be looking to sweep their five game road trip in the first game of TNT’s Thursday night doubleheader. Phoenix has cruised through 4 games with relative ease, scoring 112 points or more in their last three games. Devin Booker had a monster outing where he scored 48 points in Mondays 121-107 blowout of the San Antonio Spurs.

The Suns were without injured big man DeAndre Ayton as he will remain out tonight with an ankle injury. But reserve center Bismack Biyombo responded with a 17 point 14 rebound double double. Phoenix may be the most well-rounded team in the NBA. Not only do they rank 1st in scoring offense with 112.5 points a game, they also rank 6th in scoring defense with only 104.6 points allowed per game.

Mavs Will Need More Than Just Defense

The Phoenix Suns have had their way with the Dallas Mavericks in their previous meetings. This will be the Mavs final shot at redemption unless they meet in the post-season. The Mavs are coming off a hard fought victory over the Toronto Raptors where Luka Doncic had an amazing performance. Doncic had 41 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists, leading his team in all three categories.

Dallas has the ability to put up a fight defensively, but may not have the offense to keep the pace with Phoenix’s scorers. The Mavericks come into this game with a fully healthy roster. Dallas has played stellar defense as they rank 2nd in scoring defense only allowing 102.5 points a game. However they have struggled to score with only 105.4 points per game.

Dallas Mavericks vs Phoenix Suns Prediction

The Phoenix Suns are three point road favorites with a 217.5 over/under. The Mavericks have been hot recently but just don’t have the firepower to keep up with Phoenix. The Suns are deep, even without Ayton they still have Javale McGee and Bismack Biyombo to fill in. They have the ability to outscore the Mavs and shut them down defensively. The Suns are well rested and waiting while the Mavs are coming off a hard fought game just last night.

Both teams play an elite level of defense, especially recently. The Mavs have held their last 10 opponent’s to an average of 94.5 points a game. Both head-to-head matchups were Suns covers that went under this total. We are going with two plays in this contest, the Suns -3 and under 217.5. It feels like the Suns could score over 110 points while holding the Mavs to less than 90.

Prediction: Phoenix Suns -3 & UNDER 216.5

Dallas Mavericks vs Phoenix Suns Preview from GoldSheet

Phoenix has won eight in a row straight up against Dallas, but the Suns couldn’t cover either of the previous two games against the Mavs this season, both of which were played in Phoenix. Dallas didn’t have the services of Luka Doncic in either of those games, played two days apart in mid-November, so things might be different this time around. Mavs beat Toronto last night for their 10th win in the last 11 outings, with Doncic netting 41 pts., grabbing 14 rebounds and handing out 7 assists.

The Mavs are 5-2 against the number playing unrested this season, although the Suns are surging again, winning seven of eight themselves, including six straight road victories. Dallas defense has smothered teams lately, as Jason Kidd’s renewed emphasis on that end of the court has Dallas at the top of the defensive efficiency ratings over the last 15 games and Mavs have allowed just 94.5 ppg and have held foes to 29.6% from beyond the arc in the last 10 and have covered three of last four as a home dog. Phoenix C Deandre Ayton will miss this one with a sprained ankle, leaving minutes on the table for JaVale McGee and Bismack Biyombo.
