Detroit Pistons vs LA Lakers Predictions
- Detroit Pistons +7.5 vs Los Angeles Lakers
- Total: 209.5 Points
- The Lakers are 5-0 against the spread in the last five meetings with Detroit.
The Los Angeles Lakers head to the Motor City for a Sunday evening matchup with the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics 130-108, as not even the return of Lebron James was enough to avoid their third straight loss. The Detroit Pistons fought hard against the Golden State Warriors before eventually succumbing to them 105-102 in a home loss on Friday night. Unfortunately it wasn’t all that impressive considering the Warriors were without Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. Detroit has alternated wins in losses in their last 6 games and have lost 7 of their last 10 games overall. The Lakers come into this game with an 8-9 record straight up and 6-11 against the spread while the Detroit Pistons are 4-11 straight up and 6-9 ATS.
The injury bug has bit the Los Angeles Lakers early in the season which isn’t a huge surprise considering their veteran roster. However they have remained close to .500 to spite being without their centerpiece Lebron James for the past 8 games. Anthony Davis has been banged up as well but has played thru it with an impressive 24.2 point and 10.9 rebound average per game. Head coach Frank Vogel doesn’t seem to plan on lessening James workload as he played 32 minutes while scoring 23 points and collecting 6 rebounds.
What’s cause for concern is the Lakers defense is allowing 113.3 points per game which ranks 29th in the association. They have been solid offensively as they average 109.2 points a game which is good for 9th most. They also rank 2nd in pace mostly due to Russell Westbrook flying down the court at breakneck speed. Its going to be interesting going forward to see how the additions of Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony amongst others gel with Lebron James now that he has returned.
The Detroit Pistons are at the beginning of a rebuild after managing to put themselves into position to draft Cade Cunningham with the #1 draft pick. Cunningham missed the first four games of the season and while he obviously has a bright future, it’s going to be a bumpy road while the Pistons work on building around him. Offense has been a true struggle for this young team as they rank 2nd to last in scoring with only 98.5 points per game. The Pistons also rank a lowly 29th in rebounding and 27th in assists. Jerami Grant is their leading scorer with 18.1 points a game followed by Cunningham scoring 14.2 and Saddiq Bey scoring 13.6 a game. The Pistons have been a little bit better defensively but still only rank 18th in scoring defense while allowing 107.4 points a game.
We also have an interesting matchup as the Lakers have played horrendous defense with the Pistons offense being equally as bad. Considering Lebron James took a loss in his first game back and the Lakers don’t play again til Tuesday I’m expecting an extra effort to get a much needed win. It just seems like this Detroit offense can’t score on anyone and they aren’t good enough on defense to keep a lid on an inspired Lakers team. Anthony Davis is going to get whatever he wants against this Pistons frontcourt that ranks 29th in rebounding.
The Lakers are favored by 7.5 points in this one with a total set at 209.5. In expectation of a get right game for Los Angeles so I’m going to lay the 7.5 points with Lakers. As far as a prop play I would look towards Anthony Davis for points or potentially points+rebounds. We should expect AD’s points prop to be set at 23.5 based on prior games and if that the case I’ll gladly pounce on it.
Official Play: LA Lakers -7.5
Official Prop: Anthony Davis Over 23.5 points (projected line)

Detroit Pistons vs LA Lakers Analysis from The GoldSheet
This formula is not working for Los Angeles, as the Lakers are in 9th place in the West and have a losing record (8-9) after absorbing a 130-108 defeat at the hands of the Celtics in Boston Friday night. Not sure if Detroit has any plan at all, unless it’s akin to the Houston Rocket plan (crash and burn, then rise like a Phoenix from the ashes). If that’s the plan, it might be working, as the Pistons really only have one “piece” to work with (well, maybe 1½ pieces…PF Jeremi Grant and rookie PG Cade Cunningham, who’s contributing 14 ppg, 6 rpg and 4 apg). They are still recovering from the ill-fated deals on Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan but will have money to spend next year and almost a blank slate in 2023-24. That doesn’t help them in this situation right now.
However, here’s how far the Lakers have fallen; they have only been a road favorite (as they are in this game) one time this season. It’s a sure thing that LA better get busy if Rob Pelinka and LeBron James wish to change course and morph from the White Star Line Titanic into the Seven Seas Explorer. Lakers have enough up front to win the Grant vs. Anthony Davis matchup, and if Russell Westbrook would just stop shooting threes, he’d be hitting 52%. Not in love with laying the points, but Pistons’ average result is a 9-point loss.
