Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans Analysis

The Warriors will try and rebound after their worst performance of the year against Dallas last night as they travel to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans who have shows little to no life the last three games as they’ve lost those three by an average of 15 points. They will at least have a days rest where Golden State is on a back to back, and they may have caught Golden State in the perfect spot to get an upset win. The Warriors are -2.5 point favorites and the total sits at 213.5 so let’s dive in and find a winner.

Wounded Curry

As I write this, I do not expect Curry to play tonight. He has been in the worst two game shooting slump of his career and he banged knees against a Maverick last night and was clearly bothered by it. With it being a back to back, and Golden State having their eyes set on a Championship run I would be stunned if he plays, and they line reflects that. Obviously, this team doesn’t not look as good on paper without Curry, but last night Curry actually held the team back with his poor shooting. So now the role players are left to take over, and last game the Warriors were without Curry they lost by 19 to Toronto, so I don’t have high hopes for this squad lead by Looney, Green, Wiggins and Payton.

Reeling Pelicans

The Pelicans have lost three straight, but in fairness it’s been to Utah, Milwaukee and Phoenix. A week ago, this game looked like a nightmare after playing those three teams, but tonight they have a real shot to steal a win. They’ve been ok on offense scoring 104 or more in nine straight games, but their defense has been non-existent as they allow over 110 a game. They will be with Ingram, Graham, Hart and Valanciunas and that’s important because after those four the production falls off a cliff. Alexander-Walker is the only other player averaging double digits in scoring, and he only scored five points last game out.

Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans Prediction

I’m ignoring ATS and Totals trends in this game as the Curry injury changes the entire dynamic of this game. The defense of New Orleans is not good, but I’m not sure Golden State can take advantage with this lineup as they don’t have any dynamic scoring. This is a game Golden State is going to have a hard time getting excited for as Steph will probably be out, and the return of Klay is right around the corner. The Pelicans know they have a chance to pounce on a wounded team, I’ll take them to break their three game losing streak and win straight up.

Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans Preview from GoldSheet

New Orleans sagging despite HC Willie Green having most of his Pelicans back in the roost (and mostly out of quarantine). The Pels have lost and failed to cover 3 straight, a period in which they were last in the league in net rating. Meanwhile, Golden State is coming off an upset loss at Dallas last night, a somewhat shocking 99-82 setback in which Steph Curry was 5 of 24 shooting and the Warriors made only 5 of 28 shots (18%) from beyond the arc. That result allowed Phoenix to pull even with GS, and now Utah is only 1½ off the pace in the Western Conference. Golden State is 6-1 vs. the points coming off a SU loss this season and covered 2 of 3 on the road playing in the 2nd night of back-to-back games.
