Hornets vs Nets Analysis
The Brooklyn Nets travel to Charlotte for an Eastern Conference showdown with the Hornets. Both teams have identical records of 32-33 as they scramble for positioning at the bottom of the playoff picture.
The Nets have lost four straight games as they continue to plummet after their hot start, while the Hornets have won two straight games. The Nets torched the Hornets 111-95 in their lone head-to-head meeting at home way back in October. These squads will meet for a third and final time at the end of March.
Durant and Nets Hope to Get Back on Track
The Nets started the season strong at 23-9, only to go 9-24 since and land closer to being out of the post-season than the top of standings. They overhauled their roster at the deadline, sending James Harden and Paul Millsap to Philadelphia in exchange for Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond. We still have yet to see Simmons touch the court this season.
The Nets most recent loss came Sunday in Boston by the final score of 126-120. Kevin Durant finished with 37 points and eight assists, while Kyrie Irving chipped in with 19 points
Defense has been the Nets’ downfall as they rank 21st with 111.8 points allowed per game. Offensively they rank 12th with 110.8 points a game. LaMarcus Aldridge is out for tonight’s contest with a hip injury, while Cam Thomas is questionable with a sore back.
Hornets’ Story Eerily Similar
The Charlotte Hornets didn’t start quite as hot as the Nets, but were six games above .500 prior to losing 11 of their last 15 games. The good news is they have won two straight and will look to carry that momentum into Tuesday night.
The Hornets scored a 123-117 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night. Terry Rozier led the team with 31 points, while Lamelo Ball put up 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. It was an encouraging game from Ball, as we have seen all of his statistics drop since the All-Star break.
The Hornets are also relatively injury free outside of Jalen McDaniels being listed as questionable. The Hornets are also similar to the Nets in that they play poor defense while excelling on offense. They score and allow over 114 points a game, ranking second offensively and 28th defensively.
Hornets vs Nets Prediction
The Brooklyn Nets come into this game as 4-point road favorites with a huge total of 240 points. When the season began it would have been hard to convince me that Nets and Hornets would be battling for play-in positioning at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
Both teams have struggled recently straight up and against the spread. The Nets cover a league worst 38% of the time, but are much better on the road at 18-15-1 ATS. The Hornets cover the number 55% of the time, but are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games.
There will no doubt be plenty of scoring, but the total seems a bit too high. However you won’t catch me backing anything under with these teams in action. If the Nets scored 120 points against a high-caliber defense like the Boston Celtics, they are going to run circles around the Hornets. The Nets know they need this victory and KD hasn’t won since his return. Brooklyn Nets laying the four points is the play here.
