Indiana Pacers vs Washington Wizards Analysis
The Pacers will be looking to bounce back from a brutal season where they went 25-57, including a 16-25 record at home. The Wizards are hoping to get out to another hot start after finishing last season with a disappointing 35-47 record. These two teams split the season series 2-2 last year with both teams sweeping their two home games.
Pacers Face An Uphill Battle
The Indiana Pacers finished the 2021-22 campaign a pathetic 32 games below .500. You will be disappointed if you are hoping for improvement as they traded away their starting point guard Malcolm Brogdon. The Pacers finished last season losing ten-straight games and went 4-16 in their last 20 games of the regular season.
The key to Indiana’s 2022-23 season is to load up on draft capital and free space going forward. Tanking for Victor Wembanyama is definitely on the table for this squad, especially if they get off to a slow start.
In order to fully tank, Indiana will need to trade away Myles Turner and potentially Buddy Hield. It looks like the Pacers are prepared to give Tyrese Haliburton a max deal in the off-season to build around him.
Newly-acquired big man Daniel Theis won’t be available tonight as he rests after playing in the NBA Finals with the Boston Celtics and in the Eurobasket 2022 for Germany. The Pacers have a solid backcourt with Haliburton an Hield but there isn’t much for depth up front to back Turner.
Wizards Hope For Playoff Magic
The Washington Wizards came out like gangbusters and won ten of their first 13 games to open up the 2021-22 campaign. That didn’t last very long as they proceeded to go 25-44 after their magnificent start.
The key to the Wizards season is going to be staying healthy throughout the entire season. This will be the first time their “Big Two” of Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis will play together as Beal was already on the shelf when Porzingis was acquired.
The Wiz made some off-season moves to complement the two players as they traded Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith for Monte Morris and Will Barton from the Denver Nuggets. They also added former Wisconsin Badgers guard Johnny Davis with the tenth overall pick in the NBA Draft.
The starting five projects to be Kyle Kuzma, Beal, Porzingis, Morris and Barton. If Beal stays healthy, this Wizards team should be competing for a playoff spot.
Indiana Pacers vs Washington Wizards Prediction
Luckily we have player props readily available to us because picking a side in this contest would be like pushing ice cream up a hill with a stick.
What really stands out here is the Pacers looking to build around Tyrese Haliburton moving foward while Myles Turner and Buddy Hield look to potential trade bait. He really took over as a scorer late last season with 15+ points in each of his final eight games of the season. Haliburton has a max deal in front of him this coming offseason so he will be motivated to stuff the stat sheet.
We have seen players like Darius Garland, Ja Morant, Tyler Herro and Jordan Poole get multi-year $100+ million dollar deals recently and Haliburton could become part of that group. Haliburton scored 15 and 21 points in his two games against the Wiz as a Pacer down the stretch last season.
With a total of 227 points and a point spread that’s close to a pick’em, a close high-scoring game is projected, which will give Haliburton plenty of opportunities to score. Haliburton has a point prop total set at 15.5 and I’m all about the over in this one.
