LA Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks Predictions

  • LA Clippers -4.5 vs Dallas Mavericks
  • Total: 207.5 Points
  • Los Angeles has won seven of its last eight home games.

The Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers play the back end of a back-to-back in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. The Clippers won 97-91 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 10-7 while the Mavericks fell to 9-7. This is a mini rematch from last year’s post-season where the Clippers won in 7 games. Last season these teams also met three times in the regular season with Dallas winning twice. The Clippers are an impressive 8-3 straight up at home while posting a 6-5 home record against the spread. While the Mavs are 3-6 SU on the road with a 4-5 ATS record away from home.

The Dallas Mavericks have been without their superstar Luka Doncic for three games and are now 0-3 without him. It’s been reported that Doncic re-aggravated his knee injury at practice today, so it appears they will be without him once again on Tuesday night. Dallas just doesn’t have alot of firepower to begin with, but without Doncic it’s a glaring issue. They rank 23rd in the league in scoring with only 103.6 points a game. A lone bright spot has been Kristaps Porzingis who had another solid effort with 25 points and 8 rebounds on Sunday. Beyond that the Mavs haven’t gotten any consistent offensive production. Defensively the Mavs rank 11th while allowing 105.5 points a game. While Porzingis has stepped up, he’s not the kind of player who can lead a team.

The Los Angeles Clippers snapped a two game losing streak on Sunday against Dallas. They had lost back-to-back games against New Orleans and Memphis, but you had to figure they were going to run out of gas as those were the 4th & 5th games in only a 7 day span. The Clippers have gotten accustomed to life without their #1 player in Kawhi Leonard. They are also more equipped to deal with it as they do have an excellent #2 player in Paul George. George has really stepped up as the team leader and led the way on Sunday with 29 points and 6 assists. Reggie Jackson has emerged as a solid #2 player and is lethal from beyond the arc. The Clippers only rank 20th in offense with 106.1 points a game but have exceled on defense ranking 4th while only allowing 102.3 points a game to opponents. Los Angeles also got some good news as veteran Serge Ibaka played 12 minutes while rounding himself back into form.

There is no official line for this game due to uncertainty surrounding Luka Doncic. However it’s pretty obvious he isn’t playing considering the reported setback. Last game was played at the same venue and the Clippers were favored by 3 with an over/under set at 211.5, so we will work with that as a baseline. The Mavs have struggled on the road and they lack firepower. While I’m assuming they get a better effort than a 2-12 shooting performance from Tim Hardaway, it still may not be enough. The Clippers have been rock solid at home and have the ability to clamp down defensively.

My official play on this game will be the Clippers -4.5. They have gotten a chance to rest and should be able to handle a Doncic-less Mavs. Last game Tim Hardaway’s points prop was set at 16.5, which is a number he’s cleared more often than not this season. He shot a putrid 2-12 from the field and he’s to good of a shooter for that to happen twice in a row. We’ll assume it’s 16.5 again, however we may get a bargain at 15.5 based off his prior performance.

LA Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks Analysis from The GoldSheet

Not quite the same optics we saw back in May during a blistering playoff series won by the Clips. Kawhi Leonard and Luka Doncic were both on the floor six months ago; they’re both out tonight (and Kawhi not to be seen on the floor again until well after New Year’s). That’s all much the same as we saw two nights ago on the same Staples Center (it’s not Crypto.com yet!) floor, when Paul George was the best player on the court and scored 29 in LA’s 97-91 win. That was also the latest in a series of efforts in which Ty Lue has extracted some serious defense from his troops; the Clips have held five of their last six foes to under a point per possession.

Meanwhile, without Doncic (ankle/knee), Jason Kidd has had to change up his rotations, impacting an offense that was hitting on all cylinders until a week ago; not so much in the three subsequent games minus Doncic, all Mavs losses. The thought in Big D is that Doncic returns sometime later this week, perhaps when Dallas gets home on Saturday to face the Wizards. Without him in the lineup, however, it’s probably advantage Clips again, playing it back with another likely “under” as we saw two nights ago. Play the Under.
