Los Angeles Clippers vs Washington Wizards Analysis

The Los Angeles Clippers (23-25, 9th in West) are three time zones away from home for the first of two regular-season meetings against the Washington Wizards (23-24, 10th in East). The Wizards are positioned to end a three-game home losing streak. The “Other LA Team” is 7-13 straight up and against the spread across their last 20 scheduled events.

The Wizards have been offensively challenged since they traded Russell Westbrook. I am not suggesting that the Wiz were more effecient or capable with former Mr. Triple-Double, just the reality of who they were last season compared to what they have been in this 2021-22 campaign. Washington averaged 116.3 points per game a season ago, ranking fifth overall in the Association 1.5-points less than Milwaukee’s top-scoring offense. The Wiz have scored an average of 107.7 in the first half of this season.

The Los Angeles Clippers could replace Washington in the above statements. However, the change would also require that Russell Westbrook be whited-out while inserting Kwahi Leonard. The Clippers of Staples Center scored 113.5 ppg a season ago and have averaged 105.3 through 48 games in the current campaign.

The Wizards are still a 2-point heavy offensive group. Washington scores 60.3 of their 107.7 points a game from inside the 3-line. That 60.3 ppg is a tick lower than last season’s 66.3 rim-points.

This season, Washington ranks at the bottom of the transition charts, scoring 8.7 fast break points per game compared to nearly 12 points in transition last season.

To revisit last year’s Wizards squad that was inconsistent and streaky with Bradly Beal and Russ Westbrook as the conductors of the Washington offense. The Russ-less Wiz have surrendered an average of 109.9 points per game, while last season’s Beal and Brook team allowed nearly 120 points per game.

Wizards Continue to Fail Their Backers

Washington is 3-13 against the spread in their last 16 games as a favorite, 0-5 against the spread in their last five games as a home favorite, and 1-9 against the spread in their previous ten games overall.

The team’s top two scorers, Bradley Beal (23.6 points per game) and Kyle Kuzma (19.9), shoot just 45 percent from the field. In January, Washington had the 29th ranked effective field goal percentage.

Washington is 0-3 straight up and against the spread in their last three games and since the first week of January are 4-6 straight up and a stupid 1-9 against the spread. This month, the Wiz own a 113.2 offensive and defensive rating in non-garbage time minutes.

Clippers Bipolar Disorder Exacerbating

Los Angeles is working inside of an eight-game road trip. Sunday’s loss at Madison Square Garden ended a 3-0 against the spread run for the Clippers.

The Clippers are defense-heavy, or so we thought. LA has covered the bookmakers’ number in three of their last four games and has done so by outscoring their defense’s porous performances.

The Knicks ended the Clippers’ three straight covers by recording a 115.8 offensive rating in their win at MSG. New York shot 46 percent from the 3-line. The current state of the Clippers’ defense prohibits the squad from winning, competing at anything less than the lowest level in the league.

LA doesn’t attack the rim and is heavily dependent on shooting at a high percentage from beyond the arc. The Clippers rank 28th in frequency of attempts at the rim. In the same statistical folder, the team owns the second-worst rim defense in the league allowing over 68 percent of the shot attempts in the paint to find the bottom of the net.

Los Angeles Clippers vs Washington Wizards Prediction

Two teams that are both overvalued in the marketplace square off in one of the few Tuesday Association events. The first five for both teams play to each other’s strengths or reputations. If the pair play to just a fragment of their skill-set tonight, the most probably return on investment comes from the game total.

Both teams can’t muster the heart or the stomach to scratch out wins, but the pairs margin of victory and against the spread +/- find the Clippers with -1.2 and -1.9 while Washington checks in with -2.1 and -1.9. The physics of these two squads and the teams’ strengths find tonight’s matchup:

When two objects with equal and opposite momenta collide Inelastically, what occurs?

They collide inelastically with nearly the same opposite momenta, the two stop, and the resultant combined object has zero momentum.

WagerTalk’s pick to click is a play Under the Total.

Los Angeles Clippers vs Washington Wizards Preview from GoldSheet

Washington has been bleeding pro-Wiz bettors dry the last 3 weeks, as Wes Unseld Jr.’s team is just 1-9 SU since Jan. 3rd win over Charlotte. The Clippers aren’t exactly killing it either, hovering at .500 straight up (12-14) and vs. the number (13-13) since early December. Neither team playing a lot of defense, either, ranking 18th and 19th over the past dozen games in defensive efficiency.

Over the total could be worth a look, as the series has gone that way in 9 of last 11 meetings, the Clips are 3-1 “over” last 4 currently and Wizards 10-6 “over” last 16 (although coming off 2 straight “unders”). Washington shooting 47% over its past 10 games led by Kyle Kuzma (20 ppg, 49%, 11 rpg L10) and G Bradley Beal (24 ppg, 5 rpg, 7 apg this season).

Ex-Clipper Montrezl Harrell will probably come with something extra facing his old team, and surely no love lost between ex-Laker Kuzma and the Clips.
