Mavericks vs Jazz Analysis
The Utah Jazz head back to the American Airlines Center in Dallas for Game Five of their first round series against the Mavericks.
It’s been a back-and-forth series thus far with the Jazz evening the series 2-2 with a razor thin 100-99 victory in Game Four. Luka Doncic from injury and put up 30 points in a losing effort.
Jordan Clarkson led the way for the Jazz with 25 points of the bench. Tip off for Game Five is set for 9:30pm EST.
Mavericks Hope To Keep Home Court Advantage
After losing a highly contested battle in Utah, the Mavs need to win Game Five to maintain home court advantage as they will inevitably head back to Utah for Game Six.
Dallas fought hard and won two of the first three games of the series without Luka Doncic. Doncic returned for Game Four but the Mavs lost despite him scoring a game high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Jalen Brunson who took over offensively when Doncic was out, scored 23 points with five rebounds. While Brunsons scoring will take a hit, him stepping up cannot be understated.
In this four game stretch Dallasvin scoring and average of 107 points a game on 44.5% shooting from the field. Dallas ranks 2nd in scoring defense with an average of only 105 points allowed per game.
Their defensive prowness has been on display in this series as they have limited a potent Jazz offense to right around that season average.
Jazz Even Series With Close Victory
The Utah Jazz narrowly avoided a third consecutive loss in the series with a 100-99 victory in Game Four. The Jazz led by 16 points in the 2nd quarter but the Mavs bounced back and almost stole the game in the second half.
It took a Rudy Gobert alley-oop Dunk with 11 seconds remaining on the clock for a Jazz victory. Spencer Dinwiddie ended up missing a three-point buzzer beater for the visitors to end the game.
Jordan Clarkson led his team with 25 points, while Donovan Mitchell added 23 points and had a game high seven assists.
Rudy Gobert posted a 17 point 15 rebound double double. During the series, the Jazz are averaging 105.3 points a game on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Jazz have held up well defensively, outside of allowing 126 in Game 3. Take that game away and Utah is holding Dallas to 101 points a game.
Mavericks vs Jazz Prediction
The Dallas Mavericks are favored by 3 points with a total set at 213. The Jazz scratched and clawed their way to a one point victory in Game Four, but I expect a different result as the Mavs play at home on Monday night.
Luka Doncic having a game under his belt can’t be understated. The Mavs struggled with offensive continuity with only 99 points on 43% shooting.
This should improve as Doncic works his way back into leading his team. I think the key here will be Dallas ratcheting up the defensive intensity as they feed off the home crowd.
Look for the defense to be disruptive as always as they limit Utah from beyond the arc. I’m confident backing defense in the post-season, so I’m confident backing the Mavs as a small three point favorite at home in Game Five.
Prediction: Dallas Mavericks -3
