Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs Analysis

Friday night the San Antonio Spurs will head into Memphis for a Southwest Division showdown with the Grizzlies. The Spurs record dropped to 14-19 after losing 110-104 against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.

San Antonio was scheduled to play again on Thursday against the Miami Heat. However the game was ultimately postponed due to the Heat missing so many players with Covid issues. Meanwhile the Grizzlies won their third consecutive game to improve to 22-14, good for 4th place in the Western Conference.

The San Antonio Spurs will be without their top player in Dejounte Murray, as they have been for their past couple of games. Murray is a huge loss as his leads the team with 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 8.4 assists a game. The Spurs were only able to get to the free throw line 9 times against Utah, which is unheard of in today’s NBA.

Keldon Johnson will be the next man up for San Antonio. In the first game without Murray, Johnson scored 27 points while going a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc, however he ultimately struggled his next time out against Utah. The Spurs will need an ultimate team effort to beat the surging Grizzlies on New Years Eve.

Last game out for Memphis was an impressive 104-99 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Grizz are now on a 3 game winning streak as Ja Morant works his way back from Covid protocols. Morant scored 41 points against LA and hit a career high 6 three pointers.

Memphis will once again be without their 2nd leading scorer Dillon Brooks who is in quarantine. The Grizz will to continue to ride the momentum into Friday night.

Memphis is favored by 5.5 with a total set at 226.5 points. The Grizz have struggled to cover the number against the Spurs, as the Spurs have covered in 5 of their last 6 head-to-head meetings. The over has cashed in eight of the Spurs last 11 games and 5 of the Grizzlies last 7 against San Antonio. Both teams like to score and neither is a defensive juggernaut. This total has climbed a couple points from the original opening number, and I agree with the move.

Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs Preview from GoldSheet

First meeting this season between these clubs, and Ja Morant got the best of the Spurs in recent meetings, as the Grizzlies have won the last 3 straight-up. Memphis looking better after adjusting to Morant’s return from injury and winning 3 straight, but a storm Cloud on this game as F Dillon Brooks (19 ppg) is sidelined in quarantine and has missed those recent victories. Brooks will be out again but San Antonio is missing G Dejounte Murray (18 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 9 apg), and he is an important counter to Morant.
