Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs Analysis
The San Antonio Spurs will play host to Miami Heat at the AT&T Center on Thursday night. This is a make-up game that was originally scheduled for December 29th, which was canceled due to the Covid storm in the NBA that seems to have come to an end.
Both teams blew leads late in the game and ultimately lost on Tuesday night. The Heat are now on a three game skid after losing 110-106 on the road in Toronto. Meanwhile the Spurs lost a tight battle at home against the Golden State Warriors by a final score of 124-120.
The is first meeting between these teams that will meet again on the 26th of this month.
Spurs Immersed in Trade Talks
After losing two straight and five of their last seven games the San Antonio Spurs are now 19-33 and seller’s at the upcoming trade deadline. In the latest loss, the Spurs won each of the first three quarters, building a 15 point lead only to lose the 4th quarter 35-16 and ultimately lose the game to the Warriors.
No surprise, Dejounte Murray led the team with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Trade rumors surround the Spurs who already dealt Bryn Forbes to the Denver Nuggets two weeks ago.
Thaddeus Young and Jakob Poeltl could both be on the move. Poeltl is on of the most coveted big men in the league. He has drawn interest from the Brooklyn Nets who could send back a worthwhile package of young players and draft picks.
Poeltl is currently out of of action in the concussion protocol and won’t be available on Thursday night. Dejounte Murray and Doug McDermott are both considered day-to-day with wrist and ankle injuries.
The Spurs score and allow just over 111 points a game, ranking them 9th and 25th respectively. Their offense is run at the 5th fastest pace in the league.
Heat Need a Spark on the Road
The Miami Heat are mired in a three game losing streak after losing the first two games of their six game road trip. The Heat are also part of the trade rumor mill, it’s reported they have interest in acquiring Rockets center Christian Wood with Duncan Robinson being the main player they would part ways with.
In their latest game against the Raptors Bam Adebayo had a monster performance with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Jimmy Butler fell two rebounds short of a triple double. Kyle Lowry has been upgraded to questionable after being out with personal issues.
Jimmy Butler and PJ Tucker are both also questionable for tonight’s contest. The Heat rank 6th with only 105 points allowed per game and 16th in points scored scored with 108.7 points a game.
Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs Prediction
The Miami Heat are 4.5 point road favorites with the total set at 220.5. The Spurs have only won 5 of their last 19, with most of the five wins against bottom feeders.
I would recommend the Heat here if Butler is good to go. Instead I’ll focus on the total. The Heat have went over the total in their last seven games as well as eight of their last nine road games.
The Spurs have cashed overs in four of their last six games overall as well as 17 of their 27 home games. We’ll make the over our official play. Official Play: OVER 221.5

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs Preview from GoldSheet
Miami lost its 3rd straight game at Toronto on Tuesday night and continues this 6-game road trip in San Antonio.
Even the return to action of star Jimmy Butler couldn’t save the Heat from defeat at the claws of the Raptors, where he was a helper, (16 pts., 8 rebs., 12 assists, 2 steals), but C Bam Adebayo’s big game (32 pts., 11 rebs.) just wasn’t enough as the Heat lacked support as Tyler Herro was held below his seasonal average coming off the bench.
Clearly, San Antonio presents a vulnerable target for Erik Spoelstra’s Heat to rebound, as the Spurs are just 5-15 straight up in their last 20, and 3-7 straight up and against the number last 10 at the AT&T Center.
With a night off it’s likely Butler will be ready to go again and hopefully improve on his 3 of 10 shooting in Toronto and Gabe Vincent has averaged 14 pts. & 5.4 assists over his last eight games.
Also note that Spur C Jakob Poeltl was KO’d Tuesday with a head injury and he might not be available. That’s key considering the matchup with Heat pivot Bam Adebayo.
