NBA Championship Odds Analysis

Courtesy of Andy Lang: With the trade deadline and All-Star game rapidly approaching now is as good a time as any to see how the NBA futures market is looking. While the Warriors and Suns sit on top of the standings there are multiple teams that could make some noise in the 2021-22 post-season.

Currently, the biggest story in the Eastern Conference has to be a knee sprain that will shelf Kevin Durant for another 3-4 weeks. The Brooklyn Nets are still championship favorites at +260, despite Durant’s injury and Kyrie Irving only being available for road games.

The top of the Eastern Conference is a log jam with only 2.5 games separating first and sixth place. The scrappy Miami Heat have fought adversity and scratched & clawed their way to the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks continue to get healthy as they approach another playoff push. The Bulls are hanging around waiting to get healthy in the No. 2 spot. The Philadelphia 76ers also have an outside shot, considering they have Joel Embiid and potential reinforcements if they can pull off a Ben Simmons trade. The upstart Cleveland Cavaliers sit in 3rd place, only 1.5 games removed from the leaders.

Early on the Western Conference has been dominated by the Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors are the current favorites to emerge from the Western Conference and just got Klay Thompson back in the fold. The Suns have the league’s best regular season record and were only a step away from a ring last season. The Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz occupy 3rd and 4th place out West. They are both dangerous teams that nobody will want to face in May or June.

Trade Deadline Looming

The NBA trade deadline of February 10th is right around the corner as teams look to add pieces to improve their playoff chances. It seems like Ben Simmons name pops up in almost any major trade rumor. Most recently it’s James Harden from Brooklyn in what seems like an implausible trade to Philly. Apparently the 76ers are willing to wait til the off-season to maximize trade value though.

Indiana Pacers Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner are on the block with the Blazers, Mavs, Raptors, Knicks, Hornets and Kings as potential suitors. However, it would take a package similar to the haul Orlando received for Nikola Vucevic in the off-season to land Sabonis. With the Portland Trailblazers unlikely to march deep into the playoffs, CJ Mccollum, Norman Powell, Robert Covington and Jusuf Nurkic are all available.

The Miami Heat have shown interest in Rockets center Christian Wood with Duncan Robinson being the main player they would part ways with. Meanwhile the Boston Celtics still have Al Horford, Dennis Schroder and Josh Richardson on the trading block. They aren’t willing to move Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown or Robert Williams III but would listen to offers for Marcus Smart. Obviously this is just a snapshot of all the potential deals that could go down between now and February 10th.

All-Star Weekend 2022

The NBA All-Star game is coming to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland Ohio on February 20th. Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen are the two Cavaliers most likely to represent the team. However, both would rely on the being nominated as a head coach reserve. Lebron James and Kevin Durant will again be the captains for their perspective teams as they finished with more votes than anyone in their conferences. Next Thursday on TNT, the coaches will unveil their reserves and Durant & James will choose their respective teams. The starters have been named, with Demar Derozan, Joel Embiid, Trae Young and Giannis Antetokounmpo join Durant from the East. While Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Ja Morant and Nikola Jokic join James out West. 1997 was the last time the NBA brought the All-Star Game to Cleveland, which commemorated the leagues 50th anniversary.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Cold?

The Phoenix Suns are red hot of late, no pun intended. The Suns have won 8 straight games and 9 of their last 10 overall. Over the course of the last 10 games, the Dallas Mavericks are still hot at 7-3. The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers are the hottest teams in the East at 8-2 over their last 10 games, moving them up to 1st & 3rd in the East respectively.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the coldest team out West, they have lost 11 of their last 12 games including their last 6. Meanwhile the Indiana Pacers are imploding as they have lost 13 of their last 16 games.

Individual Awards

Prior to his knee injury, Kevin Durant was the favorite to win the NBA MVP but missing 4-6 weeks in middle season will make it nearly impossible. Joel Embiid has surged to the top of the MVP odds at +250 after scoring 30 points or more in 17 of his last 20 games and 40+ points in 3 of his last 5 games. Steph Curry has the 2nd best odds at +310 as he’s led the Warriors to 2nd best record in the league. Curry has averaged over 26 points a game, but his shooting has been off recently. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a former MVP that is now in third-favorite status at +330. He’s averaged 28.6 points, 11.3 rebounds and 6 assists a game, classic Giannis. Another former MVP Nikola Jokic rounds out the top four candidates at +400.

Evan Mobley is the huge favorite for rookie of the year at -250 The big man has averaged 15 points and 8.1 rebounds a game for the 30-19 Cleveland Cavaliers. Scottie Barnes from the Toronto Raptors has also had great season with 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds a game, he is currently at +450 odds. Cade Cunningham from the Detroit Pistons still has an outside shot at +500 odds.
