NBA Coach of the Year Trends

Since its inception, the award has been given to 40 different coaches and no coach has won the award in consecutive seasons.

Gregg Popovich, Don Nelson and Pat Riley have each won the award three times while Hubie Brown, Mike Brown, Mike Budenholzer, Mike D’Antoni, Bill Finch, Cotton Fitzsimmons, Gene Shue and Tom Thibodeau have each won it twice.

Johnny Kerr is the only coach to win the award with a losing record (33-48 with the Chicago Bulls in the 66-67 season) due to leading the team to the playoffs in their first year in the league.

Doc Rivers is the only coach to win the award without reaching the playoffs as the 1999-2000 Orlando Magic went 41-41.

2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year Prediction

Considering the favorite is sitting at 8 to 1 odds, there is value is splitting your bet and there are two candidates that stand out to me.

Ime Udoka was the head coach in Boston from 2021-23 and he was suspended in the second year for violation of team policies.

He was hired by the Rockets in April of 2023 and immediately turned the culture around in Houston. The Rockets became a much better team defensively, going from 28th in points allowed in 2022-23 to 14th in 2023-24.

They have a solid core between Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green & Fred VanVleet and now they have added toughness and leadership with Steven Adams in the mix.

There are also high hopes for the #3 draft pick Reed Sheppard. Houston finished .500 last season as the first team cutoff for a play-in game and Udoka finished 7th in the voting.

If they can make that jump to a winning record and be involved in the postseason, Udoka will have a great case for the award.

2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year Prediction: Ime Udoka +800 DK

2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year Longshot Prediction

Voters love nothing more than a redemption arc as three of the last four Coach of the Year winners saw a single season improvement of .200 or better and that’s what’s on the table for Taylor Jenkins and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis was a 51-win team in 2022, and Jenkins finished runner up for this award. Injuries decimated the Grizzlies last season, and they were forced to play 33 different players, so it was borderline miracle they won 27 games.

They have what looks to be a new NBA ready starting center in the former Boilermaker and #9 pick Zach Edey.

Jaren Jackson Jr will miss some time to start the season but if Morant can stay out of trouble and the core players like Desmond Bane can stay healthy, this team has the opportunity to make a huge leap in the standings and that do wonders for Jenkins chances.
